Good Folks,
I hope its not OT and i>m in right place;-)
I>m looking for zoom module for Pan/Tilt camera (surveillance
camera). Lots of options are out there but unfortunately couldn>t
find even single that can fulfill our requirements. All available zoom
modules are 1) huge and 2) heavy for our delicate and tiny motorized
pan/tilt platform. After doing lot of search i>m stuck with
fundamental questions. Is it the technical barrier that all available
zoom (say 10x zoom) assemblies are huge or its merely a common
practice? Does it has to do something with lens diameter ?
All available 10x zoom modules are roughly (L)100-to-70×(W)60-
to-40×(H)40-to-33 in mm.
Is it possible to find some solution that comes with light weight and
small in size? I>m ok with even 5x zoom. Is it possible to have (L)30-
to-20×(W)15-to-10×(H)15-to-10 zoom module? Or i am just lost as i
really don>t know anything about optics ;-)
regards,
ali

Could you adapt something from a small digital camera. I>m thinking
of the credit card sized ones. Some mechanical cleverness would be
involved, but they are rather small.

Charles: Thanks for follow-up. Yeah that>s what i am gonna do as well.
But the point is those cameras have really little zoom ratio.

Have you looked into Sony>s line of OEM camera modules? It>s been a few
years now, I spec>d out an EV320(?) to be use by LA County Sheriff for
their digital fingerprinting/mugshot systems. Similar problem in that we
had to have very small and lightweight zoom on a pan/tilt head that had
some smarts built into it. The Sony>s came with all sort of niffy options
like RS-232 control over every function so that we could do white balance
on the fly, and zoom/focus over serial control from the booking platform.
That line has since expanded into firewire, etc. but I haven>t had a look

modules were very popular in dome surv. cameras in Vegas, again
for the small size, and a very good image. The main rep that I dealt
with was Boris from their NJ office, I>d take a look online first though.
Good luck!

Can you please point to some web link or any valid pointer ? I cann>t

Thats what i am looking for. In terms of unit say ~70 grams would be
even a lot for me.

Thanks for that.
But too much to get by as it says
# Weight: Approx. 230g (8.1 oz)
# Dimensions (W x H x D): 55.3 x 57.5 x 88.5 mm (2 1/4 x 2 3/8 x 3 1/2
inches
And my pan/tilt diameter is around 60mm and can>t drive the weight
more than 70g
Anyway, thanks again.

Here>s the link to Sony>s OEM and industrial type products. You should be
able to find something here. Also, Sony is very good at making up custom
modules to fit your application, so it>s worth talking to them even if you

As well, Sharp Electronics have all sorts of OEM camera/zoom
modules. I had tested theirs prior to selecting the Sony>s and it
was close. I don>t have a current contact name for Sharp, but
doing some searches on Google for "Sharp OEM camera
modules" should give you some results.
Good luck!

Also, I>ve found that they are very willing to take old inventory which is new
condition, and "re-purpose" it for OEM use. We got our hands on
their EV9-something 3 chip modular camera that they had
discontinued, but had filling up their shelves. We asked to have the
RS-232 options that were available on their new cameras fitted
to the EV9, as well as a genlock option, and they had them re-worked
and in our hands in less than 2 weeks, and for 50% of MSRP. Pretty
good deal! In the end we stuck with a single chip camera, and once
we signed a NDA they gave us all sorts of goodies to help us get
exactly the camera we needed. Very good folks to work with, or
at least back then in the 90s. Those nice looking mug shots of
Mel Gibson, etc. were all taken with those camera>s, so it worked
out well considering the scope of the project..(200+ booking
stations in LA County).
