|
|
I have discovered through my own trial and error that If I create a
Zip file with a password, using a Windows GUI application like Winzip,
I have to then extract it using the same or another Windows GUI
application - if I try using a command-line program to extract (such
as PKZip or even the Winzip command-line addon) then I am told I have
got the password wrong. The reverse is also true - if I create a
password-protected .zip with a command line utility then it canl only
be extracted by the same command-line utility.
Can anyone suggest why is this? Is this always the case, or is there
any way to stop this happening?
Thanks in advance.

What GUI software do you use? Recently Winzip and PKZip both
introduced new encryption algorithms into ZIP which right now can only
be decompressed by the same software it was created with. Command line
programs usually support the "old" encryption type that has been with
ZIP for a long time.
You may experience what is being discussed in the thread

Thanks. I use the Winzip command-line add-on to back up my files to
removable storage. When I come to extract these files, it will not
work if I use Winzip from the GUI, only if I use Winzip command-line
or PKZip. Otherwise it tells me I have got the wrong password.
I have also experimented briefly with Powerarchiver for Windows and it
seems to be the same - it will extract Winzip>s encrypted zip files
and vice versa, but it will not extract those created by the Winzip
command-line addon or by PKZip.
