I>ve never posted to a newsgroup before - hope this is the proper way...

I am interested in buying only 5 chicks. Have read a little and have
specific breeds in mind but all the online hatcheries will only ship in
quantities of 25. The only local store to carry chicks sold out before I
could get over there.

Does anyone know of a place I might get pullets in small quantities?
Thanks!

Welcome
What breeds are you interested in ?
Where are you based?
As you are within the catchment of hatcheries shipping chicks I am guessing
you must be in the US
People here are from all over the world where things can vary quite a lot so
its good to help us by giving a little more information.
If we know what you want and where you are then folk may be able to give you
some ideas about individual breeders who might be able to help you

Thanks for responding! I>m in south-central Kentucky, USA. My plan is to
have a small group of unique, brown-egg laying, friendly hens living in a
chicken tractor close to the house. While I live on an 80+ acre farm -
there are several reasons why it>s not feasible to locate them at the barn.

As for particular breeds - I was thinking about one of each - Australorp,
Buff Orpington, Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island Red, and a Silver-Laced
Wyandotte.

Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Ask your local feed store if they will add them to their order. Both our
local feed stores (Southern States and Tractor Supply) are on the 2nd and
3rd shipments of chicks. Wanting 1 of each shouldnt be a problem. I know
that Tractor Supply orders their chicks from Mount Healthy Hatchery in Ohio.

hope this helps. I live in WV, so it shouldnt be TOO different on the other
side of the river :)

Put a radio near the tractor to repel predators.

Go to your local feed store and make a deal with them to let you add what
ever chicks you want to their chick order (do this soon as the feed stores
are already getting their first orders now) in return for buying feed from
them.

Be careful when getting RIR>s. There is a hybrid of the RIR and the New
Hampshire Reds called the Production Reds that can be mean as a snake. The
Production Reds are sometimes sold as RIR>s.
