Will a duck continue to sit on eggs even though they are no longer viable?

We have a white duck with yellowish/orangish feet, a very very pale orangish
tinted bill, and an pinky 'mask' that settled here (we live on a flood
control lake).

She nested in our llama shed, and laid a dozen eggs and began setting. One
egg disappeared. Three have hatched. It>s been a week since any hatched, but
she>s still setting. Should we leave her alone or ditch the eggs?

Thanks!
Lynette

Hi, Lynette!
I really can>t say what breed of duck you might have, not being
aquainted with all of them. But as far as her behavior, it seems she
probably is not of a breed that knows what to do as far as raising her
young. She should have left the nest with the babies that DID hatch
after two or three days at most. At this time it would be best to
remove any unhatched eggs, candle them to make sure they are not
alive, and (presuming they are not), tear up her nest. She may stil
come back with her babies for safety at night. The babies need food
and water. If she has been sitting all this time, I>m surprised they
are still alive!

Kathleen,
Thanks
We went ahead and removed the eggs this mornong.

The mother has taken great care of her little ones.
She has taken them out often for walks and food - I>ve been leaving her feed
and fresh water nearby.
She has had them to the lake several times, and they>ve had a ball swimming
in the cool whip container of drinking water in the shed!

She>s been very busy keeping up with the three young ones and sitting on the
eggs in between.

She doesn>t even seem to miss the eggs we removed.

My only concern is that now, when I walk into the pasture, the ducklings
come running to me. They>ve already associated me with food and fresh water!

Hi, Lynette![/quote]
As the youngsters age they will probably get a little wilder. That>s
as long as you don>t encourage their friendly behavior. Of course,
I>d find out what kind of duck they are. Most white ducks are not
wild and you may find you have a permanent tenent.
Best of luck!

I have a feeling we DO have a permanent resident. Lucky Ducky (the mother)
has eaten out of my hand since the first week she came here.
I plan to get some pictures up, so maybe someone can help me with IDing her
breed.

The ducklings are crosses - Lucky mated with a mallard . . .
We>re not over handling them, or encouraging them to become over-dependent
on us. They>re pretty independent, much to the consternation of their mom!

Thanks
