This what if comes out of Columbus. In the days of sailing(I love to
sail) trade winds were the way to go. Being made a meteorologist by
nightbat gave me a chance to study winds across the Earth surface.(some
are predictable) Interesting is the fact that near the equator winds
could come to a stop, and yet its the fastest moving area of the Earth
surface Go figure that out. Best we realize air has to rise up from the
equator and fall down at the poles Once a sailers know wind
patterns he can set his sails and go from A to B TreBert

There is no such thing as motion. Even at the equator.
That is, there is no such thing as motion until you compare the state of one
object to that of yet another.

Maybe the winds at the equator just haven>t gotten a running start, yet.

Mark Made a print out of your post???? There is 1030mph rotation
motion at the equator, and no motion at the exact center of the poles.

One can not think of trade winds without thinking of Columbus. If he was
alive he would give much credit to the Portugal brothers that knew the
looping of this trade winds so well that before Columbus brough cod and
Maine lobsters back when fishing off Georgia Banks. These guys could
sail and fish TreBert

No there isn>t, Bert. Not unless you are comparing the state of the land at
the Equator to something else.

Go to Ecuador and look up at the sky at night.

You can tell you aren>t moving.

I read that most medieval ships used Jeish navigators. Christian
sailors weren>t allowed to study math, because it was of the Devil.
But it seems the Devil knew something about navigation!

Bert,

Only from one frame of reference does Earth spin like a top.
But don>t you think that if Earth really did spin like a top, we would all
get flung off from it?

In one frame of reference the Earth is flat as a pancake. Just go out side
and observe the ground for yourself.

To those that understand relativity, and what it really means, it makes just
as much sense to say that the Earth is motionless, ane the universe revolves
around it, as it is to say that the Earth rotates, and the universe is
motionless.

One day we will be in a spacecraft somewhere between the Milky Way and
Andromeda.

When we are between the two, in primordial drive, we will know the true
meaning of the nature of motionlessness.

Because you can>t have motion unless you are comparing the states of two or
more objects.

If you don>t do that, you are motionless.

Aren>t you motionless right now, as you sit at your keyboard typing?

Of course you are.

Mark I got the picture The Earth is flat and since it has no frame of
reference it can not be spinning. It can not be held up by turtles
since we can not see under our feet. Go figure TreBert

I know I have heard this, but how does this get around the "nothing
moves faster than c" rule with all those stars and galaxies zooming
around the Earth at FTL speeds?

No, we will still be in motion with regards to the two glaxies.

As a long time Oregonian, I cannot let Columbus Day go by without
thinking of the Columbus Day Storm in 1962, a.k.a Typhoon Freda, a.k.a
"The Big Blow". It hit Oregon with hurricane category 3 force winds.
The next day roofs were gone, trees were down, and the power was out!
My grandfather>s apricot tree that he had raised from a seed was blown
down. The roof of Multnomah Stadium (now PGE Park) in downtown
Portland was half blown off! Driving down the street you could see
trees and power line down everwhere! We were without electricity for
three weeks. Cooking on coleman camping stoves and fireplace.

Nothing was the same after Columbus Day.
