Mark I seem to be missing some thing reading these answers. Earth
spins
like a top

Bert,

Only from one frame of reference does Earth spin like a top.
But don>t you think that if Earth really did spin like a top, we would
all
get flung off from it?

In one frame of reference the Earth is flat as a pancake. Just go out
side
and observe the ground for yourself.

To those that understand relativity, and what it really means, it
makes
just
as much sense to say that the Earth is motionless, ane the universe
revolves
around it, as it is to say that the Earth rotates, and the universe is
motionless.

I know I have heard this, but how does this get around the "nothing
moves faster than c" rule with all those stars and galaxies zooming
around the Earth at FTL speeds?

***Relative to the objects around them, they are not moving at all.
Everything>s relative, rememember?

Relative to the motionless Earth they would be moving FTL.

***But that is not what is considered. What is considered is the
speed relative the space fabric where those other stars far away are.
Ah!  So it>s the space fabric that>s moving FTL!

Relative to you back on Earth, sure.

 > Or should that be
space-time fabric?

Time has nothing to do with it .
Time is deeply embedded.
Imagine it this way.
If the entire universe is revolving on its huge axis, surely
the stars on one side are moving FTL compared to the stars at the opposite
end.
Right. So it>s probably not doing that.

did you know that although the abosolute rectilinear motion through
space cannot be detected (Michelson–Morley), the absolute rotation of
the Earth can with interferometers?

I have to go along with Saul on this one, Mark. For

You just can>t see it.

Correct. As discussed here numerous times, the Earth or any
gravitating body carries with it an *entrained flow field" (EFF), i.e,
the 'reverse starburst' flow field extending out many radii from the
gravitator. At the body>s surface the flow is straight 'down'. Thus
there is *no* lateral component to the flow irrespective of the body>s
motion through space. Since the MM experiment was designed to detect
only a lateral flow, the null result was to be expected and is
entirely consistent with the vertical flow of the Earth>s EFF (aka
gravitational field or gravity well).
In conjunction with the null MMX, the aberration of star light
(apparent displacement of a star from its 'true' position due to
Earth>s motion through space) had once been deemed "proof" of non-
existance of the spatial medium. It>s one of Zinni>s favorite
recitations. :-) But it is the natural result of starlight crossing
the EFF to the planet>s surface.
..(did you know) the absolute rotation of
the Earth can be detected with interferometers?

Yep. But not its rectilinear motion through space.
The question has been asked, "why not set up an
interferometer with a vertical arm to detect the EFF>s vertical flow?"
Well, the vertical arm would undergo a Lorentzian contraction exactly
cancelling the expected fringing, again rendering a null result.

Erratum :

Oc wrote:
..the vertical (interferometer) arm would undergo a Lorentzian contraction > exactly cancelling the expected fringing, again rendering a null result.
....should read,

"..the vertical arm would undergo *elongation* exactly cancelling the
expected fringing, again rendering a null result."

This is because space and any embedded matter are stretched (not
contracted) in the direction of flow in a gravity well. (Blush :-))
