[quote]Hey,

I have a lot of trouble w/the $14 a bag of layer pellets here too in
Saskatchewan, Canada. (our $ = US $) But being blessed w/being on the
grain growing prairies I have supplemented the pellets w/screening
from the seed cleaning plant which has a lot of peas in it as well as
wild oats, barley, canola, flax and a plethora of weed seeds. I also
add to the mix rolled corn, whole grain oats and wheat.

So lately it>s been (by parts)

3 - Layer Supplement (38% protein)
3 - Screenings
2 - Wheat
1 - Corn
1 - Oats

I only have a small flock of 50 black sex links and all the chickens
and 5 Guinea>s free range far and wide in the yard so they get enough
bugs I>d think to supplement protein and fight over the juicy mouse
corpses that the cats leave around. Chicken football we call it lol
I bought 10X year old layers.... something w/brown feathers and black
in the tail for $1 each. What a deal, the diet must be good as been
getting 9 ginormous eggs a day.

Update:

Added to above

1/2 - Oyster Shells
1/2- - Kelp

Working well, layers do 6 eggs in 7 days chicks are enormous

Been thinking about holding some for the winter and think I>m going to
shoot a deer and grind it up into 1lb ground meat pkgs. and dole one
out every couple of days and eliminate the layer supplement @ $18./20
kg. The kelp should give them all the minerals etc. they>ll need.

cheers

peter
