BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7660409.stm

The US government>s debts have ballooned so badly the
National Debt Clock in New York has run out of digits to
record the spiralling figure.

The digital counter marks the national debt level, but when
that passed the $10 trillion point last month, the sign
could not display the full amount.

The board was erected to highlight the $2.7 trillion level
of debt in 1989.

The clock>s owners say two more zeros will be added,
allowing the clock to record a quadrillion dollars of debt.

Douglas Durst, son of the late Seymour Durst - the clock>s
inventor - hopes to replace the Manhattan clock with its
lengthier replacement early next year.

For the time being, the Times Square counter>s electronic
dollar sign has been replaced with the extra digit required.

For its part, the digital dollar symbol has been supplanted
by a cheaper version - perhaps a sign of the times for the
American economy.

Some economists believe the $700bn bail-out plan for ailing
US financial institutions could send the national debt
level to $11 trillion.

licked their chops and vote for the bailout as soon as that extra $100

Pork was put in by both sides, to get more votes on both sides, and
they did.

If you get rid of the spin and look at both sides you will see that
both these parties are useless. Congress controls the budget and the
laws.

BTW way it was the Democrats that blocked an amendment that would
require full disclosure of the spending provisions known as earmarks

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2007/jan/12/20070112-123022-7858r/
"Senate Democrats backed off promises to reform pork spending
yesterday, using procedural tactics similar to ones they attacked
Republicans for employing in past Congresses.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, stalled a vote on a
Republican amendment that would require full disclosure of the
spending provisions, also known as earmarks. The maneuver -- which
continued through last night and into today -- gives Mr. Reid time to
turn Democrats against the measure, which is similar to the ethics
rules adopted with much fanfare last week by the new Democrat-led
House.

Immediately before Mr. Reid stopped the amendment to the Legislative
Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007, the Senate expressed its
support for it, rejecting a bid to kill it on a 51-46 vote. The
measure would require that members of Congress disclose all earmarks
they request."

Why are you posting a two year old article?

Sept 2007 to now is two years?

This is a watered down version of the bill, they blocked the amendment
by the Republicans that had more teeth. The impression that I wanted
to create was that Democrats also want to protect their pet projects
and this bill that limits the projects that has to be reported just
proved it.

Oh and I love this part,

"Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said it was ludicrous to suggest
someone in his position would "cheat and lie" to hide earmarks"

Yeah would members of the democrats or republican ever lie and cheat?

Funny how after tripling earmarks in their 6 years the GOP suddenly
got religion. A complete lack of other issues and dirth of successes
to point to sent them scouring for an emotional issue.

The law requires all earmarks to be reported and their sponsor named.
Sunlight.

(For what it>s worth ear marks are not an all out evil - hence
allowing them but in the sunshine is a good solution. When I lobbied I
got an earmark passed for testing Vets returning from Iraq and
Afghanistan for exposure to depleted uranium. Was that evil?)
