LOL - you want to be here 24/7 - real life in our house is even funnier at
times!
Current topic in the house is "Is Henrietta really a Henry?"...
She (maybe he?) is a Splash Cochin, and was bought as a hen last Sept, but
as of late is showing signs of "lesbian tendacies" - i.e. playing tiggy-back
with the girls..., as well has having a very deep voice!
Netty is convinced she>s a he (the cochin - not Netty!), and I>m
proliferating stories of how I saw her in the nestbox / look, see, she>s
laid an egg / etc... etc...
As it is Henrietta seems safe at the moment, but if "she" crows again within
Nettys earshot I think it might number "her" days...
I>ll keep you various Hen Friendlies updated as to her fate!
(Nasty Netty wants to get rid...) ;-)
Maybe we should start a poll? - Should "Henrietta" be spared?
(Jeez - had to do some careful editing & loads of deleting on this post!). |

We had a Phyllis, purchased as a pullet. Gorgeous little black bantam,
wonderful beaufont hairdo, quite friendly. Then she started crowing. I tried
to hush her up, knowing the consequences of her actions. I was told if she
laid an egg she could stay. Oh how I willed that bird to lay. Alas, no eggs
and much crowing. The friendliness turned to stroppiness and we were
ambushed every time we ventured into the back yard. There was a patter of
running claws, the crinoline shuffle of feathers and POW right in the back
of the legs with feet kicking and wings flapping. PHILLIP! was put in a box
one night and the next morning, along with all the other non laying,
crowing, saddle-feathered, long tailed chooks, he was whisked away to the
saleyards. Phillip had actually been pipped from his post by the bigger
yet younger roosters and was seeking us out for protection rather than a
surprise attack by this stage and we were both a little sad to see him go.
Someone bought him for $10NZ and he was far too small for the pot so I live
in hope that he is a happy solo rooster with his own little group of girls.
We are at a similar stage of confusion again with the adolescent chicks from
Mabel. I>ve named one of them Kiri, well I named it Kiri on a day when I
was sure beyond all doubt that she was a pullet...... now I>m not so sure.
Friends told us to look at the stature of the bird, if it has a sort of
plump squatty stature with a deep breast, it>s a pullet, if it stands erect
and has a flat breast and upright stance it>s a cock. My thought is, it>s
having a stretch... oh Please be having a stretch Kiri!
The threat of the pot is not likely in this household. I just can not! even
think of killing any of them and then cooking them. I now know it runs in
the family! My late Grandmother (who was born in 1896) refused to kill any
of their chooks and eat them and back then it was even more likely to be the
plan and purpose.
My argument is .... um... well... NO!
and the reason why chickens are so great, they don>t need to be shorn, you
don>t have to get up at some horrid hour to relieve them of their egg and
the egg comes pre-packaged.! What more could you ask for! Not only that but
they are a constant source of amusement, albeit a little frustrating at
times (helping in the vegetable garden, clearing out the bugs in the soil
around a newly planted shrub or tree, or in Sluggers case, getting in the
hole you>re digging to get the worms.
One has to be vigilant when digging holes around here. Slugger has no fear
of the spade, shovel or fork, it>s just an inconvenience to her, it takes up
space in 'her' hole.)
Selectively cunning and brilliant at making you walk four times further than
you needed to because they do know how to get back into the yard but it was
a hoot leading you all the way down the race and into the horses paddock.
I know this to be true, I hear them cackling about it at night as they
settle down to roost. "led her a merry dance today bok boook, all the way
down the fence Boook booook".

When I was a kid, I sometimes would whistle at the table. My Mother
said:
"Whistling women and crowing hens,
ALWAYS come to NO GOOD END!"
