To whoever wrote the post below:

Maybe if you spell your words correctly, someone might take your request
seriously. I am not inclined to help you if you cannot even spell the name
of the discipline correctly; I am not even sure what an "anthrologist" is.
Since you are on the internet, perhaps you can start with a google search on
the subject of your paper. Once you narrow the sources down, then perhaps
ask your peers to comment on the validity of those sources. Please do not
ask me to do your work for you.

So the fact that this person is very obviously not posting in their
native language (check the headers for more indications) qualifies
them for no slack at all?

Floyd Davidson is an Alaskan with an interest in the native populations, he may
have a few ideas for you if we can get his attention.

It is difficult to determine exactly what you want to know. Which
island? (That sounds like Iceland or the Faroe Islands???)

The important thing to look for is how ingrained whaling is with
their methods of teaching children the value system of their
culture. If that cannot be replaced with a functional education
system they will lose the basis of the original culture. It
won>t be just a case of "change their culture", but rather an
almost total loss of the value system underlying it with
retention of only superficial characteristics.

Here are some URLs that list links to a variety of social and
political views about whaling, including some about the cultures
based on whaling:

http://luna.pos.to/whale/soc.html
http://www.highnorth.no/Library/Publications/hna-pub.htm
http://www.highnorth.no/Library/Library.htm

The first is centered on Japan, the second two are primarily
focused on Norway. Both have some information on other areas
though. In particular the third one has this link:

http://www.highnorth.no/Library/Culture/cont-cul.htm

which concerns the aboriginal subsistence/culture issues and
lists some 40-50 articles on everything from Russian whaling to
discussions of health issues.

Probably the people whose association with whaling is best
documented are the Inupiat Eskimos here on the North Slope of
Alaska. It is still hard to find really good concise
information on how tightly the hunting of whales is bound to the
culture. You have to read between the lines to some degree,
realizing that this is a culture with an oral tradition. The
way a parent teaches a child is to provide an example, told as a
story, which involves whaling... and the story only makes sense
to the child to the degree that child has experienced whaling.
Without whaling experience, there simply is no education system!

But what you will find among all of the various written
materials available does describe the sense of community formed
by effort to catch whales.

Here is another URL, this one specific to the Inupiat, with
several links. You might find several of these useful in
developing a sense of the integration of whaling into a culture.
