David,
You could be right. I thought the water hole was around 1.5 to 1.7 GHz
but that the microwave window was around 1 to 10 GHz. The water hole was
neat in it>s day because this region is also a an atmospheric quiet spot.
Today we have satellites so atmospheric noise may be less of a problem. And
more importantly the microwave window does not require us to believe in the
importance of water or local atmospheric conditions.
If the folks at SETI are still pushing the water hole I suspect that they
are limited by atmospheric noise caused by budget constraints ( no
satellites ). All the really cool alien music is broadcast at 10 GHz since
it>s a quiet region and all musicians have 10 fingers ( except for Django ).

Hopefully, we have /all/ of astronomy and physics looking for "odd
signals" in whatever searches and experiments that are being run.
Something 'unexpected' might unexpectedly turn out to be an ET artifact...
Also hopefully, SETI can in itself have enough spin-off benefits, such
as Boinc for example, to then be seen worthy of funding.
(OK, all very 'hopefully' :-) )
Keep searchin',

No there is not a Boinc group like this one, there are forums within[/quote]
Boinc itself that I think people are using much more than when Classic
was around. |

Yes, there is a BOINC message board. Go here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/
and down near the bottom left is a link to the
message boards. You have to register, but it is
a short form to fill out and not intrusive. Every
BOINC project has a message board as well. I check
them all once a month to see what is up.
Usenet will always be here for the purists or old
skool style of text only communications. But facing
facts tells me that the young kids coming online are
herded more to message boards, IM, and www. Its a
reality of commercialism and visual ads drawing them
in like moths to a flame. That said, wikipedia.com
and google.com projects seem to hold my interest more
than usenet projects and discussions as of late. I
guess it all comes down to our first experiences with
computers. If we tried usenet first and it was good,
then we stick with it. If we tried GUI first and it
was good, then we might avoid text only except for IM.
But some people try GUI and instead of the acronym being
Graphical User Interface, it is Graphical User Interference
and the user might gravitate to usenet or vi or unix
instead.

The SETI questions and answers message boards are here:

The general discussion SETI message boards are here:

You>ll get a far better - and more informed - response there than here.
Most of the posts to this NG (like many others) are now spam. Those
boards are moderated and you have to be a registered SETI user to post
there.

I would add to that that the posts by the sp0rgers and nutbags are the
other spoilers. Because there is currenly no way to remove the nutbag
posts in un-moderated groups, people get turned off. I>ve almost
ditched a few times, the only thing that keeps me coming back is the
