Geesh Bob, have you never learned how to read?
Geesh, Greg, you have to even ask? :-)

Eh, I>m grouchy. :-)
This has been discussed before.
The astronaut would activate their SAFER unit and make their way back to
the station.
After that, I believe (and I>m not going to bother to do your homework
here) after that, if the SAFER doesn>t work, the shuttle crew would board
the shuttle and begin undocking ops. Recovery of an astronaut using the
payload bay as a huge catcher>s mitt was tested on an earlier mission.
Of course, you have to have multiple failures to occur for all this to
occur.
Right. ISS EVAs use dual-tether protocol. So we>re talking two tether
failures and one SAFER failure here.
Also don>t most EVA involve the use of the SSRMS? I suspect there might be
an attempt in some cases to mane that.
I recall a STS mission (I think a Hubble one) where an astronaut dropped a
bolt or something and the operator in the shuttle was able to mane the
astronaut quickly and safely enough to let him/her recover it.

Forgetting the established "must train for 6 months before moving the
arm by 1cm" procedures, would crews be able to dynamically manipulate
the arm to reach an unprogrammed position ?
I take it that it would take hours of slow and meticulous work to move
the SSRMS to a position where it could start to be handled more
dynamically without fear of it colliding with the station ?
Is situational awareness with just the cameras on the arm and station
sufficient, would would attempt to grapple some floating object be more
succesful if an astronaut were strapped to the arm or DEXTRE and telling
arm operators "half a meter to the left" type of commands ? |

I recall that the Skylab Umbilicals had some sort of "locking chain".
Series of links with thick cord through them or something so tehy could
"lock" the umbilical in position.
Anyone else recall that?
