The guy or whatever is totally mad. But the problem is,
Min is exposing the alter ego. The guy is probably that

Aren>t we fortunate that "they" represent no direct danger to us while
"we" are at our keyboards? A degree of anonymity online can nicely
loosen the inhibitions of those lacking a cast iron belief in
themselves.Total anonymity however can loosen the "devils" within. Few
of us have the balls to stand in front of a crowd the size of our
total online readership over time. The ability to address the world
without engaging the flight or flight pilot is a strange new
experience for a great many. I doubt that many forum posters, bloggers
and website authors consider their audience with the same serious
concern as they would, of necessity, in "real life". Most of us have
never had to speak to more than half a dozen people at any one time
unless they were our own family. A hesitation or a mispronounced word
in public can gnaw at the child within. Even break or make a career.
We set incredibly high standards for those we listen to.
Scribbling online may well prove a lack of talent. Nor offer anything
much to grab the attention of others. Remember that this is completely
new territory for all of us.There has never been any easy way for our
thoughts to be expressed except in a very private diary. This has all
changed with access to the Internet. It is a fascinating area of
discovery of oneself and the reaction of others to this virtual
persona for most of us. A vast psychological experiment with all of us
acting as more or less willing guinea pigs. I>d be very surprised if
many of us don>t exhibit multiple personalities at the keyboard
depending greatly on our chosen audience. Those who berate the trolls
should consider instead the freedoms offered by such threads within
the normally rather stiff behavioural framework of a forum.
The human race is the sum of all of its parts. Until very recently
only the rich and powerful, or the gifted, had any voice at all.
Exclusion rather than inclusion has been the order of the day for our
entire history. Be very careful what you wish for. Min and Oriel are
merely another facet of our strange new world. Dropping the rough cut
stone of the internet into a black bag now will never allow it to
emerge again in all its strangeness and wondrous beauty. No nmatter
how the powerful shape and fashion it to their own ends of rigid
conformity. The powers-that-be would dearly love to limit our
dangerous new freedoms. Note how the many dictators of our world fear
it above all else. People have discovered that they can actually
organise themselves online. Well outside the bent rules of politics
and corrupt laws and religious intolerance.
So learn to tolerate the trolls for what they are. Loon or teaser
alike. They are just a few more stamps on your passport to freedoms
you have never enjoyed since man lifted himself from all fours. Then
handed his soul, his will, his freedom, his voice, his thoughts, his
spirituality and often his life to the biggest male in the pack. |

Obviously this would seem to apply to the vast majority of online

on a great
many of these "debates" or whatever they are (I use the term "debate"

loosely). |

Of course he>s a troll. You just can>t spot the difference. Netloons
are easy to spot. They are delusional. They believe they alone have
some "answer" to share with the world that nobody else can see. Nothing
will shake them in their belief. The behavior is to cling stubbornly to
some simple irrational belief. For examples see Gerald Kelleher (oriel)
or Brad Guth.
I have supporting texts to demonstrate that your beliefs are unfit for
humanity and what is more, you have far more in common with Min>s
astrological leanings than with me.
I have asked that astro observers accept that their Ra/Dec observing
system be limited to a convenience which allows structural astronomy
to floiurish whereas the astrologically and calendrically based Ra/Dec
framework is catastrophic. Is it so bad that the basic ideas which
support clocks, longitude and planetary geometry/geography are thrashed
so you can have the silly correlation between axial rotation and the
23 hour 56 min value or that Newton>s silly view of retrogrades are
not supported by observations.
You call me troll, loony or worse but not one of you have ever used the
original texts along with imaging to support your cartoon and notions
and the ones you do provide are not those of astronomers -
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1d/Tiempo_sid%C3%A9reo.en.png
If you want a rule of thumb as a standard from my side it amounts to
belief in that graphic and its description of the Earth>s axial and
orbital motion.A person believing that a location merily returns to
noon every 24 hours exactly deserves to be left alone as somebody with
nothing to say.
A troll just says any wild thing he can think of to get a reaction. He
says different things to different audiences. A troll will change
tactics in order to keep getting a reaction rather than cling to some
message. Hell, I remember when Min was a Bushee. Now he says
Republicans are working for Satan (or some such).
Of course, I wouldn>t know any of this if it weren>t for the idiots who
can>t help themselves from responding to him, defeating untold thousands
of kill files in the process.
Min may technically be mentally ill, but we have no way of knowing that
for sure. It is usenet behavior that determines the distinction between
a netloon and a troll. Like any other astrologer he>s really just a con
man and getting a reaction on usenet is his usenet con. If you think he
truly believes any of his ever-evolving crap, then you have been trolled
sir.
The really painful thing about trolls or loons is the behavior they
bring about in the so-called "normal" people. Regardless if they are a
loon or troll, they can>t help themselves. What is much more pathetic
is someone trying to claim victory in a logical argument with one of
them. What>s *their* excuse? I know several people who routinely kill
file anyone who responds directly to one of them. Ask them who they
think is worse and you will get a quick answer.
A good rule of thumb: a guy who wants to show how smart he is should be
picking an argument with someone who isn>t a basket case.
|
Unfortunately, stating an unsupported opinion doesn>t really

Nice job of ducking to avoid the context, although since it>s basically
an evasion you lose points for it. Let us recall that I wasn>t the one
insulting your "loon" in an apparent attempt to show how smart he is.
Again, you believe
Danny is a troll, but provide no evidence (other than a
recent disillusionment with the GOP, which really says
nothing) supporting that belief. I believe Danny is a loon,
and offer his website (and long-term general wackiness on
Usenet) as evidence. I seem to be ahead on points.
The "evidence" you have dismissed was but one example. I agree that
this is a matter of opinion. But you should know that I have been
reading usenet for some 18 years, long before Min came on the scene. I
have the dubious honor of having read parts of his nonsense for more
years than I would like to recount. I also have a certain fascination
with the fringe because they provide interesting and compelling examples
of what science is at its heart and help being into clarity the reasons
why the scientific method is the most important idea our species has
ever conceived.
It may be just an opinion, and I won>t bother to provide further
"evidence," but it is an informed one. It seems that both the trolls
and loons have one thing in common: they post to usenet for the
attention. The primary difference is that the trolls don>t really
believe most of what they spout. It is my opinion that Min does not
truly believe most of his nonsense.
But more to my point: to me the loons and loon-trolls like Min are like
piles of dung. By themselves they are of little consequence. All one
needs to do is avoid stepping in them. Unfortunately it is the many
flies they draw that provide most of the annoyance. |
