Hi all,
One of my hens has started sneezing and it>s got worse over the last few
days so she>s sneezing every couple of minutes. She looks fine otherwise
and is eating/drinking/laying ok, but sneezing every now and again.
Can hens get colds? Should I leave her for a while to see if it will clear
up on its own or get her to a vet?
Many thanks for your help,
Neil |

Hello Neil,[/quote]
Sneezing can be caused by lots of things. It can be insignificant, it
can be something bothering one particular bird or it can be a precursor
to illness some of them quite/very serious. You need to look at her
stools, her eyes, her breathing, anyone think of any more? A good time
to listen for respiratory problems is in the shed at night while she is
sleeping, this is when early symptoms are most likely to show. If she
has any type of respiratory congestion it>s best to catch it early.

Cheers for that... They>ve all started sneezing now, but the one that was
worse isn>t as bad now...!
They>re all laying (full complement of eggs yesterday), and look fine, eyes
look fine, no runny nose, breathing sounds ok, noticed a few stools today
were grayer than normal, but only a couple...
I>m lucky enough to have a veterinary surgeon about 50 yards from my house
(and I only discovered this yesterday!), and they are chicken-friendly, so I
can take them down if it comes to it.
I just wanted to know really whether it was something easily treatable or if
it wasn>t serious....
How wise is it just to monitor the situation and see if it clears up?
I plan to give their coop a good clean out this weekend (mind you, it>s very
clean anyway), do you think it could be the wood-shavings in the nest boxes?
They also have straw on the floor of their run (bare earth looks ugly!)
Cheers
