Jill,
Be brave, EVENTUALLY it will be all better, my old computer developed brain
problems last Oct, was repaired by Dec, and totally replaced in Feb, then I
had to keep re-installing every bloody thing due to XP not working well with
this or that, but touch wood, it may be relatively stable now. I don>t know
how I kept a veritable antique running with NO problems for most of 10 years
with only the cheapest of upgrades.....
But I now have every sympathy for hard drive and software problems, they
have been a source of bitter misery for half a year now (oh, we internet
junkies!)

Yes it is time for Win95, 98, and ME to die a natural death. XP is better
and it is more stable. But is also needs more memory and a faster cpu then
the other versions of windows software. XP is all Microsoft wants you to
have, that is about all you can get on a new home PC nowadays.
Even the slowest celeron cpu at about 1Ghz is plenty fast enough for most
casual users. And fast enough to run XP. If your computer is less then two
years old it is probably fine. Any older and you could have issues that
would prevent you from running XP.
Laurie your system did so well because you are a casual user with great
habits, you are very consistent in using your computer. It sounds like the
person who fixed your computer kinda drug out the repairs for 6 months or
so. It is normally not like that. XP has been much more stable then the
previous versions of Windows software, especially on the newer hardware.
Everyone on 95,98or Me should be thinking about moving to XP. If you buy a
new PC that is about all you will find, for now. Even those crafty
Microsoft peole won>t rest for long. Just when you ge your XP tamed they
will have another one that is better then XP (lololo). But that day is not
today, make plans to move to XP. They are planning to not support 95,98 or
Me.

I love Macs. I use to be a Mac support person, but they are too reliable.
They did not break as much as a windows system. There is more money in
fixing windows and lots of job security. Microsoft is only there to make
money, and they are very good at it. The new Macs are great. My brother
has only Macs and works on the internet all the time. He would not use
anything else.
Many people hate Microsoft, so we will keep getting viruses, worms and the
such. The code is full of holes and many vulnerabilities still exist.
About every 10 days or so we get another worm or virus affecting our
computers at work. What great job security for me, what a piece of crap for
users.
Microsoft Messenger is just the tip of the iceberg. Microsoft would love
for you to use it>s tools like this. But they also would like to use your
personal data for their own purposes (which is making money). Messenger is
one of the worst tools I have seen in a awhile that wants to consume your
personal data. It constantly wants to connect to home (Microsoft) and let
them know what you have been up to. I have removed it from many computers
for people. Microsoft is not to be trusted. The US government tried to
bring them to trial with a monopoly case against them. What a fiasco. Even
while they were in court Microsoft released XP on schedule. Not even the US
government can touch them or derail their monopolistic power.
I am also a UNIX and Linux engineer. I build servers and use these
operating systems all the time. They are great and much more stable then
Microsoft, kinda like a Mac. Most everyone I know is stuck on Microsoft,
they don>t know anything else and are ignorant to the other operating
systems. The Linux community is trying to loosen Microsoft>s strangle hold
on society. And in response Microsoft is trying to defeat Linux at every
corner. It will be a bitter battle that will play out over the next few
years. I love Linux and use it in my home. Trying to get corporate America
to see it that way is very frustrating. But with all the viruses and worms
lately things are starting to change. Most businesses have too much money
wrapped up in Microsoft stuff and can>t switch. All they can do is follow
down the Microsoft path and take the bumps and bruises that go along with
it. Just remember to bring your checkbook for the ride.
Sorry for the long post but you hit a nerve. I do hate using Microsoft but
it is what the majority of people have. And it is always breaking so there
is lots of money in it for me. When I retire I will most likely never use
Microsoft again. There is no need to and a certain amount of serenity that
can be achieved without it. Right now I am betting on Linux to be the
replacement for me.
Well I gotta go, going down the river in the canoe today. Hot and sunny in
Oregon today and it is beautiful. After supporting Microsoft for so many
years I enjoy anything that is not a computer. That is probably why I have
a small farm with chickens. I would rather shovel the crap in my barn then
deal with the crap from Microsoft.

Mike:
Thanks for your post about microsoft.
May I pick your brain?
For my next home computer, would you advise getting a mac? How will it
interface with the internet? Will there be a lot to learn that is so
different from how I have learned to operate a computer (and this is very
minimal, basic operation, mind you) ?
Do you know of a good, simple reference for the computer illiterate that
would help me understand it and make a decision?
Thanks so much!

Roz..... If you can raise a chicken you can run a Mac.
Don>t forget that the Mac was the first computer system
that used a graphical user interface with a mouse.
It was only when Microsoft came up with windows that any
PC was able to come out of the world of DOS.
My Mac G-3 running at about 400 Mhz is an oldie by modern
Mac standards but it>s fast enough for me and I>m a retired
graphic designer who made his living with this little baby and
it>s pokier predecessers.
Don>t forget that there are many dozens of PC manufacturers out their
making computers that basically run on DOS. Windows is a shell program
that has to interface with all those different manufacturing standards
with all the little tweaks and patches required to make their product
run on every type of PC in the world.
Imagine if one type of General Motors engine had to be able to fit into
and run on every type of motorized vehicle in the world from
motorcyles, cars, trucks, and farm tractors, etc.
In the land of Mac..... there is only manufacturing standard that
Macintosh has to worry about and that is their own.
It will cost a bit more to purchase but you know Roz in the many years
that I>ve been surfing the web and newsgroups I have never, ever, ever
heard anyone bitching about how their Mac software or computer was
screwing up, freezing etc. And anytime I read about a virus, or worm
that is spreading like the current one ..... well I don>t worry about
it at all. And neither does anyone else who owns a Mac.
Now some in the PC world don>t like that and will chastise or berate
you for choosing a Mac but I can tell you that there is no LOVE BUG
virus on this side of the fence.
And my microsoft software like word, excell, etc runs just fine along
with the many other thousands of pieces of software, shareware, and
freeware that>s out there.

I also use a Mac, and I love it. I especially love the fact that barely
anyone bothers to write Internet viruses for Macs. I>m sure they>re out
there, but I>m careful with my email and never open attachments from
people I don>t know, etc.
I think the biggest difference between a Mac and a Windows machine is
that a Mac is like a car with standard transmission vs. Windows as a
car with an automatic tranny. From my experience, the whole suite of
Microsoft programs are so tightly integrated on a Windows machine, that
you often don>t even realize you are jumping from one program to
another. I>ve asked friends of mine with Windows machines what program
they use to surf the web or send email, and I>ve simply gotten the
answer, "err, Microsoft."
I>m not dissing Windows. I>m simply used to a Mac. And since I had few
problems using a Windows machine at work, I don>t think a PC person
will have any trouble with a Mac.

Hello Laurie
Better late than never.. I am here in Germany visiting Nuele and
believe it or not I am posting from a Mac! It is a laptop, an iBook I
think they are called. There is also a big full sized Mac here and I
was hoping I would be able to get an impression of how they compare to
my Windows machine, but as is to be expected of course, the toolbar etc
is in German, and so is the keyboard. In fact the keyboard is not a
qwertyuiop keyboard but a qwertzuiopü one, which makes things verz
difficult <g> My German is worse than poor.
Nuele has some lovely rare poultry, Bergish longcrower bantams which are
very beautiful. I am really enjoying it here.
The jury is still out on the Mac..

I>m afraid I have to disappoint you both. Although an English program was
installed for my benefit, the Mac (very clever of it!) then assumed it also
had an English keyboard, which it didn>t. That is when I found out I was
not such a good touch-typist as I thought! and could not remember what
exactly was on the English keyboard when I really couldn>t see what was
there, especially the symbols, rather than the letters.
So, after that, Nuele and I just went out and enjoyed ourselves and had a
great time;-) visiting interesting places, birdwatching, canoeing and
visiting other chicken keepers etc. Nearly didn>t want to come home..
I have not discounted a Mac though, because even if I buy a new PC Windows
machine, I will still have to learn it, as it will be different from my
Win95, if it has XP on.
I am not in a rush yet to replace what I have got. It still works for the
moment. A Mac might still be in the running, although very clever things
can be done on one. Perhaps too clever for me.
I only have a very small hard drive on the computer I have got now, and it
cannot be upgraded any more, it is too old, 1996. It was upgraded last
October to a whole massive 1.3 gb! I will need a new one soon I suppose.
But what I will finally decide on I am not sure of yet.
