I read about the speed others process their SETI packets, and I think there
may be something wrong with my system.
I have a XP1800+ CPU, 256 MB RAM, 1 GB Swapfile, running Windows XP SP1 and
SETI@Home 3.08 with graphics as screensaver. My system uses about 30 hours
CPU-time pr. packet, isn>t that a bit too long?

First, the graphics uses as much as 40-50% of the processor. The best
configuration is to set it to go to a blank screen after a short time, or
even immediately. See the screen saver settings (it>s not in the client
screen. It>s on the screen saver settings screen.)
For best results, and if you are computer literate enough, use the CLI with
any of the add-ons. The WinNT version works on all modern versions of
windows and is considerably faster.
Cheers,
Mark |

There must be more to Carl>s problem than just using the screensaver,[/quote]
though; without displaying graphics it should only take four or five
hours per WU on a machine with that kind of clock speed (and even
with graphics on all the time I wouldn>t expect the speed to be worse
than halved), so something else is apparently slowing things down several-fold.

With DDR memory, you should be in the neighborhood of 4 hours per wu,
with SDRAM 5-6 hours per wu.

What else is running in the background - and consuming CPU cycles?
Do you know how to "turn things off" using Ctl+Alt+Del, and use MSCONFIG to
experiment?

Isn>t it cuaused by spyware?
You can use task-manager(when windows) or something like that to check
if other program (spyware) is consuming your CPU cycles.
To start task manager of windows 2K, right click the task-bar. Select
"process" and then "cpu" column to sort the processes that consume your
CPU. If the biggest consumer of your CPU is NOT setiathome, check if the
cunsumer is a right program for you.
You can download softwares on the internet that will wash spyware out
from your PC, Adware, etc. Please serch it by the keyword "spyware".

I use and recommend Spybot Search and Destroy. I used to use Ad-aware but
Spybot picks up a lot of things that Ad-aware misses. (I still have both on
my 'puter) And it>s free. I scan a couple of times a week.

Yah, Spybot looks smart. I try it soon. TNX.

My hunch is there was more going on than just the GUI, since I>ve run both
on a P3 machine, and didn>t see anywhere near that drastic of a change in
WU times. Maybe something got correctly configured while setting up the CLI,
or your machine had an unbelievably extreme graphics bottleneck.
