One of my ladies is looking very under the weather. I>ve been watching her
closely all weekend. She came to my attention when one of the other girls
pecked her rather visciously (s?) on a number of occasions. This is most
unlike my gang, they>re very happy together and friendly to one another. I
initially thought it was a spat over food so turned a blind eye, but it
happened again and again so I went for a closer look at the picked on hen.
She>s been very quiet, sitting in the garden alone with her eyes closed all
day saturday and sunday. Her comb is very pale pink and comparing it to the
full brilliant red of the others it>s very much smaller and the tips look
like they>re falling over. Her wattles (?) are also very much smaller than
the others. I never noticed this before, as far as I can recollect they all
looked the same healthy red, Im sure I>d have noticed if there was one who
was different. I can lift her with one hand and she doesn>t move around,
generally she dislikes being carried. She>s eating and drinking fine, I even
beat her an egg and gave it to her and she managed between snoozes to eat it
all!! The only difference in her life lately is that the rooster has started
sleeping in the house with them. I decided to leave her alone in the run
this morning when I let the others out to wander the garden but she was
having none of it, she kicked up a fierce row until I let her out, then she
promptly hunched up and went to sleep. Im hoping someone can give me a
couple of clues as to whats wrong with her as I don>t have access to a vet
who treats poultry unless I drive 100mls. Im very fond of my girls and am
more than willing to drive that far if anyone thinks it>s necessary. One
other thing, I havent wormed them recently, could that be the problem?
Should I do it now? Whats the name of the pour on that I>ve seen mentioned,
I can>t remember it now.

Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks as always
Shannie

The others may be picking on her because they sense she>s not healthy. Have
you been treating for Coccidiosis? If you treat regularly and worm at
intervals, it should help solve a lot of these problems.

Hi Shannie[/quote]
AS you know, I>m not an expert by any means - there are far more
knowledgeable people here. But I have learnt that many of the times I think
I have a problem it turns out to be something quite normal. So at the risk
of stating the absolute obvious - she may simply be moulting.

My hens are at various stages of moulting - and have been for about a month.
Some of them are laying, others seem to have completely stopped. The latter
now have very pale combs and wattles. One seems to be eating a lot less than
normal and it is more difficult to get her into the enclosed run with a
small tit-bit- bribe than it ever used to be.

I>ve heard (here or elsewhere) that I could try some cat food for them -
lots of protein and will help feed them up at this stressful time.

Sorry if this isn>t any help and if you have a more serious problem.

Shannie,
If it is Coccidiosis, go to your feed dealer and get some
Sulfadimethoxine and give this to her in the water. Just a half teaspoon of
this in a gallon of water will do. It>s a little expensive and you>ll only
need very little of this but if you want to try to save her, it might be
worth it. Leave this medicated water in there with her. This drug is good
for Cocci AND Fowl Cholera. If there hasn>t been too much damage inside, she
will recuperate. Sometimes, no matter how much we try to save our animals,
this is not possible. That>s why nature>s law is the best-The strongest
survive. I understand that she>s a pet but even so she will not be any good
later if she doesn>t recover after 3-5 days of medication. Good luck.
