We have a group of 6 chickens (2 cocks, 4 hens) that have never roosted
in the 2 hen houses, but, come rain, snow or shine, have roosted all
their short 9 month life in a pine tree. Now one of the Sikies has laid
on the ground, but not wanting any more chicks we took and ate her eggs.
However, as if in spite, she appears to have "nested" in another, much
taller pine tree. I can>t safely get up in the branches to see what>s
going on, but she>s up there all the time now, coming down twice daily
to feed and things...
Has anyone experienced this before? I can>t see if she has actually made
a "nest" as such, or has just laid in a forked branch. Quite how her
chicks will cope I don>t know! Thankfully the rest of our small flock
has more conventional habits :-)
Thanks.

Chris,
Well, after all, she is a bird...I have a hen who goes around collecting all
the twigs she can find, and builds a darn nice nest.
Also, many of them, seeing you steal their eggs, will try a new spot.

I>ve never seen this. But last year I had a hen who would fly up onto
the roof of my woodshed, and from there over to a small hole in the wall
of what used to be a pigstye in former times (a hole I had made to
encourage swallows to go in). She managed to land in that hole, and from
there she jumped down inside, to hide in a small corner where a bit of
straw had been left by the former owners.
So yes, a hen might work her way up if she wants to be undisturbed, and
I can imagine yours has found a place up there that *she* thinks is
perfect! You never can tell with chickens... at least it>s foxproof!

PS. don>t forget to take a photo and put it up on our msn website :-)
