Shannie,
I am so sorry to hear about Lily. We lost a treasured pet rabbit last
Thursday after a long bout with cancer. And we are also very attached
to our outdoor birds. We nursed an African Goose through aspergillosis
a few summers ago, and we would have felt terrible to lose her.
Lily sounded like a wonderful hen, and I can>t imagine I would have
done anything different than what you did, which was trying to pull her
through. My very best wishes are with you. She was lucky to have
someone like you.

I.m so sorry Shannie, in the past few years I lost six beloved dogs. I know[/quote]
just how it feels to lose a pet.
And for another such an emergency with the poultry I might be able to
provide you with something to tide you over to keep in the house and
administer until you can get something and send it in the post to keep in,
and I shall clear it with my vet. Just a bit you understand and for an
absolute emergency because I realise you live in an isolated place and have
a hmm not too useful vet yourself,
Private mail me if you are interested, but as I am being spammed in a major
way by pretend updates with mega attachments, replace christinadot with
cmdot, that should get through in the end.

You couldn>t.
Don>t blame yourself.
Everything and everyone dies, almost always when we don>t want them to.
Guilt is a normal and very common feeling when someone or something you care
for dies, it will go.
Just remember, when talking about your other hens, that you must never say
"never".

I would like to recommend "The Chicken Health Handbook" by Gail Damerow.
This book won>t solve all the disease problems but it will enable you to
attack the problems quickly
Vets may come but they don>t know anything about chicken diseases unless
they cater to the comercial chicken business and then their slant on cures
will be inappropriate for a small flock. Chickens tend are not to be deemed
worthy of a vet>s time, in general, because of their cost. Cruel fact of
life. I have two vets as personal friends and they both confess to
ignorance of chicken diseases. They can go pull out their vet school books
but avain diseases, by and large, are much different from mammalian ones
which is what they deal with on a daily basis. One vet friend caters almost
exclusively to the horse crowd and the other (being farther out in the
country) is basically a large animal vet. Neither one is worth anything
around a chicken coop.
This is an American rural observation. YMMV and probably does. |
