A new machine designed to "suck" carbon dioxide from the air could help in
the fight to save the world from climate change, according to physicists.

A group of scientists are devising a 'CO2 scrubber' which they claim will
capture one tonne of CO2 from the air every day, about the same per
passenger as a flight from London to New York, reducing the warming effect
of greenhouse gases produced each year.

Although the idea has been mooted as a possible weapon in the battle against
climate change, it falls far short of a quick fix solution.

The 'scrubber' devices - small enough to fit inside a shipping container -
would need to be produced in their millions to soak up human carbon
emissions, and the CO2 trapped would still need to be disposed of.

The prototype will cost about £100,000 and take about two years to construct
at a laboratory in Tucson, Arizona.

Environmentalists may warn that so-called technological solutions to global
warming undermine attempts to promote greener lifestyles and industries.

Physicist Klaus Lackner, of New York>s Columbia University, who led the U.S.
team behind the invention, said the CO2 scrubber offered more hope than
current efforts to cut carbon emissions by reducing fossil fuel use.

"I>d rather have a technology that allows us to use fossil fuels without
destroying the planet, because people are going to use them anyway" he said.

Professor Lackner said carbon dioxide could be removed from the atmosphere
by absorbing it in various chemical filters and a newly discovered property
of absorbent plastic sheets - which are routinely used to purify water -
would be used to used to clean those filters of CO2 so they can then be
reused to carry on the job.

The captured carbon dioxide could then be pumped into greenhouses to boost
plant growth.

Climate experts have reported that CO2 levels in the atmosphere are now 40%
higher than before the industrial revolution and "scrubbing" the carbon from
the air is seen as one of the greatest challenges in climate science. Sir
Richard Branson has promised £12.6m to anyone who succeeds.

Scientists at Columbia University are developing a carbon dioxide (CO2)
scrubber device that removes one ton of CO2 from the air every day, says the
Heartland Institute.

While some see the scrubber as an efficient and economical way to reduce
atmospheric carbon dioxide, many environmentalists oppose the technology
because it allows people to use fossil fuels and emit carbon in the first
place.

According to Columbia University physicist Klaus Lackner, who is leading the
research team:

Producing a large number of CO2 scrubbers can keep to a minimum any rise in
atmospheric CO2 without the economically painful elimination of inexpensive
energy sources. This technology would allow people to use fossil fuels,
which they will be using anyway, without destroying the planet.
Environmental activist groups such as Greenpeace have consistently opposed
similar technologies, such as carbon capture and sequestration, because they
do not address what they see as the root of the problem, says the Heartland
Institute.

"This is just one more piece of evidence that environmentalists aren>t
concerned about solving a problem," said Sterling Burnett, a senior fellow
with the National Center for Policy Analysis. "Every problem, as they see
it, is one way to restrict people>s lifestyles, and if you come up with a
technological fix that can solve a problem but doesn>t require sacrifice and
lets us go about our business the way we were before, they>re not happy
about it, even if it solves the problem."

# What is the chimney problem?
A chimney discharges smoke, steam, gas, etc, into the atmosphere,
instead of recycling it.
We don>t allow raw sewage discharge into the ocean, so why let chimneys
shit into the atmosphere?
The scrubber idea sounds sensible, and should be tried.
If all chimney waste products can be recycled, then "clean coal" has
arrived, and - no problem. But act fast, as the climate change "window of
opportunity" is closing.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/2061358/'CO2-scrubberandrsquo-could-help-slow-global-warming.html
A new machine designed to "suck" carbon dioxide from the air could
help
in
the fight to save the world from climate change, according to
physicists.

A group of scientists are devising a 'CO2 scrubber' which they claim
will
capture one tonne of CO2 from the air every day, about the same per
passenger as a flight from London to New York, reducing the warming
effect
of greenhouse gases produced each year.

Although the idea has been mooted as a possible weapon in the battle
against
climate change, it falls far short of a quick fix solution.

The 'scrubber' devices - small enough to fit inside a shipping
container -
would need to be produced in their millions to soak up human carbon
emissions, and the CO2 trapped would still need to be disposed of.

The prototype will cost about £100,000 and take about two years to
construct
at a laboratory in Tucson, Arizona.

Environmentalists may warn that so-called technological solutions to
global
warming undermine attempts to promote greener lifestyles and
industries.

Physicist Klaus Lackner, of New York>s Columbia University, who led
the
U.S.
team behind the invention, said the CO2 scrubber offered more hope
than
current efforts to cut carbon emissions by reducing fossil fuel use.

"I>d rather have a technology that allows us to use fossil fuels
without
destroying the planet, because people are going to use them anyway" he
said.

Professor Lackner said carbon dioxide could be removed from the
atmosphere
by absorbing it in various chemical filters and a newly discovered
property
of absorbent plastic sheets - which are routinely used to purify
water -
would be used to used to clean those filters of CO2 so they can then
be
reused to carry on the job.

The captured carbon dioxide could then be pumped into greenhouses to
boost
plant growth.

Climate experts have reported that CO2 levels in the atmosphere are
now
40%
higher than before the industrial revolution and "scrubbing" the
carbon
from
the air is seen as one of the greatest challenges in climate science.

Richard Branson has promised £12.6m to anyone who succeeds.

ENVIRONMENTALISTS OPPOSE NEW CO2 SCRUBBER IDEA

Scientists at Columbia University are developing a carbon dioxide
(CO2)
scrubber device that removes one ton of CO2 from the air every day,
says
the
Heartland Institute.

While some see the scrubber as an efficient and economical way to
reduce
atmospheric carbon dioxide, many environmentalists oppose the
technology
because it allows people to use fossil fuels and emit carbon in the
first
place.

According to Columbia University physicist Klaus Lackner, who is
leading
the
research team:

Producing a large number of CO2 scrubbers can keep to a minimum any
rise
in
atmospheric CO2 without the economically painful elimination of
inexpensive
energy sources. This technology would allow people to use fossil
fuels,
which they will be using anyway, without destroying the planet.
Environmental activist groups such as Greenpeace have consistently
opposed
similar technologies, such as carbon capture and sequestration,
because
they
do not address what they see as the root of the problem, says the
Heartland
Institute.

"This is just one more piece of evidence that environmentalists aren>t
concerned about solving a problem," said Sterling Burnett, a senior
fellow
with the National Center for Policy Analysis. "Every problem, as they
see
it, is one way to restrict people>s lifestyles, and if you come up
with
a
technological fix that can solve a problem but doesn>t require
sacrifice
and
lets us go about our business the way we were before, they>re not
happy
about it, even if it solves the problem."

# "Garbage" is an apt word, under the circumstances.
I>m at opposite end of the political spectrum to Climate Change
Skeptics - I>m a Prophet of Doom, and predict that the Mad Ape, Homo
(self-styled) Sapiens, the Darling of the Gods, will be decimated or extinct
by 2050 AD,
Odd about the Skeptics. These folk probably swallow all the guff dealt
out by theologians, yet when majority of world scientists say global warming
is happening, and produce evidence to support it - the Skeptics pop out of
the woodwork (what>s left of it), and go into Denial.
True, climate change tends to be insidious, slow, and underhand - but it
is creeping up on us, and we ignore warning signs at our peril. It is
likely too late already to reverse the trend, to extinction.
The major polluting industries want to be feather-bedded when it comes to
action, and are quite happy to pass on any cost to the average mug in the
street - thus helping precipitate a Depression.
Almost any move we 6.5 billion human locusts now make impacts adversely
on our habitat, and once it is ruined, then we are ruined also.
So, Climate Skeptics, dream on, but don>t blame me if you wake up and
find yourselves dead.
Tomorrow is National Tree Day (whatever that means), so I>ve composed a
little ditty for the occasion:

I think that I shall never see,
A thing more stupid than a Tree.
Let>s take an axe, and make it fall,
And, just for laughs, on you 'n all.

Homo Sap chopped trees too often,
So Nature gave him a wood coffin.

# What is the chimney problem?
A chimney discharges smoke, steam, gas, etc, into the atmosphere,
instead of recycling it.
We don>t allow raw sewage discharge into the ocean,
Wanna bet? Most of Sydney>s sewage is untreated and is discharged 2 km
offshore.
so why let chimneys
shit into the atmosphere?
The scrubber idea sounds sensible, and should be tried.
If all chimney waste products can be recycled, then "clean coal" has
arrived, and - no problem.
No problem? So, you>ve scrubbed the CO2 - fine. What do do with it now
you>ve scrubbed it? BIG problem.
If you knew anything about geology, you>d know that geosequestration is
untenable, so what do you do with your captured CO2?
