I also live in the county (michigan) and how I keep mine close to home is, I
dont let them roam free till there is only a few hours of light left. Then they
cant go far. However once in a while I leave the gate open and they end up
everyplace. The farm next door to me raises Bison/Buffalo and I have had my
chickens in the fields with them and they dont care. When it gets dark, they
return home on time better then a 16 yr old boy in heat. I also have extra feed
and water out to tease them into staying close but my garden has bugs and at
thats where they end up. |

We take our two hens everywhere and we>ve found that they never roam out of
sight of our tent or caravan, whatever we>re using. This has been true of
all the hens we>ve had. The first time they wandered off Spouse was very
worried but they strolled back home (i.e. to their travelling coop) when the
sun started going down. We don>t try to tempt them.
It>s in their interest to be safe.
