The barrage of criticism leveled at Samuel Hungtington>s notion of a
"clash of civilization" in no way lessens the vital point he made - that
however much the the grouping of people by religion and culture rather than
political or economic divisions offends academics who propound a world
defined by class, race and gender, it is a reality, one not diminsihed by
modern communications.

So anthropologists, how do you explains to your colleagues in Africa,
the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and South America that the U.S. is an
economic class (work experiences) while their is a social class (educational
degrees)?

Yeah Mike, what are you on about?

Interesting article in the most recent Economist on Islam and the West
(9/11/03) probelmatises SH>s assumptions with ease. Academics aren>t
the only ones criticising SH.

Most anthropologists would criticise SH>s work as being essentialist,
and I agree with that assessment. It>s also got other flaws, but I>ll
leave it at that.
