We haven>t had a good discussion in days, so I>m offering these.

First, now that the Presidential campaign is over, the TV news
channels have turned to what some call Henry Paulson>s bait and switch
handling of the $700B TARP.

How do you think the money should be allocated to help our economy the
best? What do you think of Paulson?

Second, the big 3 Detroit auto companies are in Congress asking for
another $25B loan from the government. They say they will run out of
money in a couple months, throwing millions of people out of work.

Should Congress throw more money at them or let them go into
bankruptcy? What do you think are the pros and cons of either way?

Third, Senator Hillary Clinton is being considered by President-elect
Obama for Secretary of State.

Is this a good idea for her, for her husband who must disclose all his
financial dealings, and for the next President who already seems to be
filling so many posts with people who worked in the past with
President Clinton?

Any thoughts, opinions, or plain-old soapbox ranting about anything
I>ve mentioned so far?

Anyone who thinks that a 25 billion dollar loan is ever going to be paid
back must be smoking something really strong. If one of them should survive
and make a $1 who do you think would get it? My first 3 guesses are UAW,
UAW, and UAW. Taxpayers will never see a penny back. If the UAW wants to
keep jobs for its members why aren>t they at the bargaining table right now
asking what they can do to help preserve their jobs instead of lobbying the
senators for more money for the auto industry?

The governor of Michigan was on CSPAN saying that if the industry didn>t get
the bailout that GM would enter Chapter 7 bankruptcy instead of Chapter 11
soon. This is total liquidation of all assets, not reorganization. If that
happens your GM car warranty is immediately worthless. A number of RV
manufacturers have went belly up and this has been the case in every
instance, worthless warranties.

I think IF they are going to do any "bailouts" there should be strict
accounting of where the money is going, and that we do not find out it
was going (again) into the pockets of the crooks that caused the
problems. Pass a bill into law that states anyone misappropriating
goes to jail for 30 years. Period.

So many questions! Don>t think I can cover them all. I sure liked
Hillary more at the beginning of her campaign than the end of it. She>s
rather hawkish, so I don>t think I>d like her as Secretary of State. As
for the auto industry, if we are merely giving them a loan, not a
straight infusion of cash, I think we could actually get something back
on that, though of course the car companies are going to have make some
painful decisions in the months ahead if they want to stay in business,
but I am not against a LOAN to them.

As for Paulson, I don>t think anyone has tried to do what he is doing
now, so it>s hard to say if he>s doing a good job or a bad one. I like
the fact that Bush acknowledges that SOMETHING must be done, even if we
don>t know exactly what that something is.

I like Hillary--think she will probably be a good Secretary of State. I
knew Obama would give her an important position, and being Secretary of
State is actually a better job than Vice President.

I am not sure about the auto companies. I think they have made bad
decisions. They weren>t producing the cars we wanted. We get a family
discount as Bob>s brother worked for GM for years, so we have stayed with
GM, but not because they were producing what we wanted. Our present Pontiac
Vibe is a joint venture with GM and Toyota, and we are VERY happy with this
car. We have never experienced a problem with the quality of any of the GM
cars we have owned--which over the years have been a lot.

While I think they have made bad decisions, part of the problem also is what
the unions have demanded and the fact that the foreign cars do not give the
same kind of benefits or wages tacked on to their price. My BIL and his
wife have pensions, excellent health care, free legal counseling, and a
whole lot of other benefits and they have been retired for several years.

So, it isn>t ALL their fault. I guess I would favor loans if structured
right. I>m not for handouts for anyone. But, all three companies showed up
in Washington in private jets today. As someone on the news said, they
could have at least downgraded to First Class. It does not present a good
picture to the public, who is the one who will pay the bill if they default
on the loans.

Paulson--he>s not totally to blame for the lack of controls, but I>m not
impressed. I don>t think he has acted quickly enough and there should
certainly have been strings attached to any grants or loans.

Obama sure has a mess to clean up!

Hillary I>m on the fence about.
The car company bailouts are really a necessary evil because of the
trickle down affect it will cause. It is possible WE will lose our
jobs because of the failure of the big 3. People are already not going
to doctors. My main doctor laid off half of his office. Is now
handwriting all chart notes and doing hardly anymore IMEs. So my 3000
a month from him -- gone overnight. I picked up a new account but they
are biting nails and may cut back as well. If the big 3 fail it will
hit us. They will then cause closing of autoparts stores and of course
no auto parts to repair the cars we have. Trickle down to any other
stores used by the millions of laid off workers, etc.

I wrote to Congress two nights ago supporting bail out WITH STRINGS.
Immediate reduction of high million dollar executive salaries.
Cancellation of all bonuses until they are solvent and the loan is
repaid -- had I known about the damn private jet I would have added
sell the damn jets. Then I mentioned since GM destroyed the electric
car in the 70s to help the oil companies a nice quid pro quo from them
would help -- not that we can force it. Then I said they have to
dedicate their lines to a majority of fuel efficient cars electric/
hybrid and no CORN FED vehicles.

Then I wrote to GM saying about the same thing and advising a nudge
from oil execs. I>m too pissed today to write a reasonable non-
swearing note after hearing they flew in on private jets. What the
hell? They wonder why they need money? What the hell kind of money are
those CEOs making? That would be a question I would want a senator to
ask. Cut those damn salaries. I also told them no high end vacation
trips to discuss what to do, they could stay home and decide what to
do like the rest of us do for our businesses.

I>m not sure about Paulson. There is a part of me that feels he and
Bush and Cheney are pocketing a good portion of this money since we
are not being told where and why some of it has gone certain places.
Like the bank bailouts, they used it to buy shares. In whose name pray
tell? The spineless democrats won>t get tough with these guys and set
rules and regs for the money -- and that has to be the only way to
give the loan, etc. No profits to CEOs, no high wages (cut million
dollar salaries to 100,000). They would come up with a lot of money
right there.

Sue -- still ranting. It>s two a.m. so I know I>m not making
sense ......
