OK...we got eight pullets I believe at the end of April/beginning of May
timeframe...when should we expect eggs?...we>ve been told any time now...is
there anything we can do to encourage them to start laying?..they forage
most of the day but we give them laying feed as well...we built them a coop
with two laying boxes and a couple of roosts. I check all of their favorite
hang-outs daily but...no eggs yet...am I expecting them too soon? Thanks.

Any day now. Expect little pullet eggs in the beginning. Don>t worry
they>ll get bigger. With eight, you>ll probably get a few eggs without
shells or at least with a rubbery shell...don>t worry your hens are just
learning.

Oh and be prepared for neon orange yolks.

You>ll probably need to keep them in their pens until late afternoon for a
few weeks when they start laying to "teach" them to lay in the boxes unless
you want an Easter egg hunt every day.

Shouldn>t feed them laying feed until they lay, can cause kidney problems.
Also they should be on 15% protein feed now to slow down their development.
Laying later is better than sooner. Also put out a free choice bin of
either oyster shell or sea shells (if you live near the coast getting tiny
shells mixed with sand behind the dunes is great).

Soon if not already.. maybe they are hiding their eggs? My spring chicks have been laying for
about a month now.

Most pullets start around 20 weeks, so...... depends on how old they were
when you got them ;>) My flock hatched first week in January started laying
at 18-19 weeks and lay an egg a day ever since. Occasionally miss a day
caused from layover. 18 hens provide 16-17 eggs daily and mostly 18 eggs per
day (pretty good production). Feed laying pellets (15%-18% protein) in the
morning first thing. My hens have usually all layed by noon and are ready
to roam the countryside. I never release them until they have layed and
always feed them scratch in the pen at dark before they go to roost.
