9 pages.....Cripes!! I set my user to reject a lot of them, a lot got
rejected on the first day that I set it that way (a few hundred), now
they>ve fizzled out. They must have stopped sending them because I don>t
have vast numbers coming onto the server & being rejected.

Not likely! I don>t want any more killers thank you ;-) The hens have never
gone broody and that is why I wanted them in the first place, so, all in
all, not a success. They are certainly beautiful birds to look at, but they
are not special in the laying department either, and they eat loads too, so
when they have gone I shan>t have any more.

My SS rooster was so aggressive I had to dispatch him. My grandson wouldn>t
venture out of the kitchen unless "the mean rooster" was locked up. I put
up with him (the rooster) for a long time because he was huge and handsome,
until the day he decided to take a run at me. Bad mistake. Of the hens,
three conform, or come close, to standards, are gorgeous, aggressive and
lousy layers of very small eggs. The fourth has few speckles, but has the
great mahogany colour, is gentle and a good reliable layer of mid-sized
yellow tinted eggs. I butchered two speckled beauties this week tossing
them in with the adolescent rooster fall food batch -- a random act of
resentment & revenge -- and for a 14 month old hen the one I immediately
turned into stew was very tasty, a good size for a layer -- particularly
generous breast and thigh meat -- and remarkably tender. I>m just about to
have a bit of her for lunch! ;-) (With apologies and respect for those who
are averse to such things. I love my chickens and I eat them too.)
Donna, who won>t be getting any more Speckled Sussex either! |

When I read "they have a lovely nature" I nearly said I will have some eggs
from you, but when I read the rest, I changed my mind ;-)
Mine laid quite well in their pullet year and the eggs are a good size,
perhaps not as big as I would have expected from their huge size, but
perhaps as big as a pullet year hybrid egg. This year, their second, not
quite so many. I was hoping for the broodiness this year, I wanted them to
hatch my non-sitting rare breeds. Nope.
Actually my Appenzellers and Lakenfelders lay just as well as the Speckled
Sussex, and eat a lot less, perhaps even half as much.. My Lakie pullets
this year have been absolutely spectacular layers. I have only four
pullets, but I am getting 3-4 eggs a day still.
My SS rooster was so aggressive I had to dispatch him.
I keep threatening mine with this but I just can>t bring myself to.
Of the hens,
My hens are absolutely sweeties. No aggression at all in them. And as I said
above, their egg size is acceptable, if not quite as large as I expected
from how big the actual hens are themselves.
The fourth has few speckles, but has the
great mahogany colour, is gentle and a good reliable layer of mid-sized
yellow tinted eggs.
Apparently the speckles increase as they get older, so I am told. Mine all
have the great mahogany colour. A couple of them are probably good enough to
show. One has too many speckles. She is the best layer, wouldn>t you know?
I only have three Mrs Attilas, I can tell all their eggs apart. One is
plain beige, one is a bit darker, and the other one is speckled, and all the
eggs are around the same size.
and for a 14 month old hen the one I immediately
turned into stew was very tasty, a good size for a layer -- particularly

Well they *are* supposed to be utility birds, after all! Eggs, then meat.
