This morning when I went out there were fist-sized HOLES in the chicken wire
walls of the pen. There were big gashes and pits and the wire was stretched
like crazy. We put up a bit of a fence 2 feet outside of the pen, but I
didn>t have enough to go around. I hope they>ll be OK tonight! I hope it
won>t decide to jump up on top (6 feet). It would definitely get in since
the wire>s just held on with staples. But since they>re so hard to trap,
amybe it would know that it wouldn>t be able to get out. I haven>t figured
out how to reinforce the wire on the doors, but something will occur to me
soon. This animal is driving me crazy.

I can>t imagine why it didn>t get in. I>ve known of small Pet dogs that have
torn through chicken wire. Welded 2x4 wire is only about 30 US dollars for
50 ft, which would at least slow down entry if used on the bottom four foot
over the chicken wire, but it will dig or climb next, if need be. Your best
bet will be an electric fence wire about 1 ft above the ground, all the way
around the hen house. This keeps dogs or coyotes from either tearing
through, digging under, or climbing up. It>s hungry; you have extra food, it
has no scruples.

Yep, invest in an electric wire or wires around the run, I use them to
stop rabbits and foxes getting into our bird enclosure and chicken run.
at http://www.formula3.demon.co.uk/wires.jpg there is a poor picture of
the 2 rows of stand off insulators for the 2 bottom strands, and there is
also an anti climb top strand along the top. the weldmesh fence itself is
very well earthed so a climbing predator is still earthed. HTH.

Best Regards,
Chris.

Yeah, I bought that wire mesh Sunday. We>ll be putting it up in the next
few days.
The only reason I can think of that it didn>t get in is that my dog started
barking like crazy in the middle of the night; that might have been it.

Try an electric fence, they are inexpensive and very effective.

I use heavy gage wire on my duck pen and nothing has gotten in yet,
knock on wood. We don>t have coyote in this area, that I know of
anyway. We have bob-cat and fox that love the ducks. I love my first
duck to a fox before I knew to pen them up at night. Chicken wire is
not strong enough to hold them off for long, please try a heavy gage
wire available at home depot or lowe>s... Sky
