|

I was feeding the chickens last night and I noticed something over the
eys of one of my bantam frizzles -- on closer examination, it looked
like she had something like warts over the top of one of her eyes
(about where the eyebtow would be) and on much of her comb! They
weren>t there last week, I don>t think, and no one else has them. Any
ideas? Do I need to take her to the vet? She>s our favorite!

I don>t know about warts on chickens as such. A friend in US has said
that there>s a lot of the of fowl pox (her birds have just got it) about
in some parts of US this year due to biting insects & warm wet weather.
The skin form of this viral illness apparently looks like pimples on
head comb & wattles. If you>re in doubt it would be a good idea to have
her checked by a vet.

vicki,
I tried to call you, no answer x 2
One of the barred rocks has what appear to be " pimples" on her wattles, one
each. SHe resents my touching them.
Krys:
tell me about fowl pox, the painters have draped my bookshelf with the
hcicken books in it!
THanks,

Hi Roz,
I>ve just looked it up. Apparently the dry form first displays as wart
like bumps on less feathered areas especially comb & wattles. These turn
yellow then brown, grey or black scabs which bleed.
A friend in Maryland has just had her chickens go down with this. Though
it is a viral infection the state lab has suggested antibiotic cover to
minimise secondary infection. I>ve forgotten precisely what she said but
it sounded like there was a bit of an epidemic at present in some
states.
The books say that mortality is low, that one should pick the scabs off
that form near mouth & eyes in order that they can eat & isolate
affected birds from the others.
Hope that it isn>t this fowl pox. Good luck.

Fowl pox will run its course within 6 weeks. Sometimes the eyes seal shut.
You don>t even have to pick it off. Just apply Vaseline to keep the area
lubricated so they don>t seal. Picking just makes it bleed and attracts more
mosquitoes who carry the virus and spread it no matter how much you isolate.
The dry pox is the least worrisome and they should be back to normal soon.

Its fowl pox. Give an antibiotic and use terrimycin eye ointment around eyes,
use camphonique a liquid cancor sore treatment for people on the sores .check
mouth for sores, clean with camphoonique If you cant get it use any
human med for cold sores and fever blisters as both are a low grade viral
infection. |
