Hi Annie,

welcome to this group!
I don>t keep any ducks, so I cannot help you a lot, the only thought
that crossed my mind was that if the drakes have been raised by a hen,
they will try to mate with her.
I also think that one single hen will feel very lonely, could you not
perhaps keep two?

Can>t answer your question but you will get eggs (if the hen is the
right age), just not fertile ones.

Nuele, feel free to add a hen or more to your flock. It has been my
experience that drakes do not fight over the hens. They my try and
run competing drakes out of the pond or immediate vicinity but I have
never seen my 4 drakes fight and I have 12 hens. They will mate
indiscriminately however so if you don>t want a flock of mixed breeds
then don>t allow them to incubate the eggs.

I>m pretty new to domestic ducks myself, but I think you should get more than one hen else she will be harrassed mercilessly by the two drakes. My two don>t fight over the ladies (I have 5 of them), but they defintely have roles. One is the protector - constantly standing guard and chases the dogs off if they get close - and the other is the breeder. He is mating every chance he gets. Kind of a bum deal for the guy who does all the work taking care of the flock! ;-)

This is very confusing. By hen do you mean female chicken or do you mean
a duck, which in English English (as opposed to American English) is the
usual word used for a female of ducks & drakes.
If you mean ducks, then the males may or may not fight, if raised
together possibly not, even if they do this usually entails nothing more
than pushing at each other & pulling a few breast feathers out. However
the poor duck will be driven potty by being constantly mated by two
drakes & sometimes in this type of male to female ratio can be drowned
while being over mated & will probably have no feathers on the back of
her head. 2 or 3 or 4 ducks would probably be a much better idea.
If you mean hens, as in chickens then, as Nuele wrote she will be very
lonely. Unless she>s imprinted on ducks (as a friends chicken is, funny
to watch her rushing along at the side of the pond). 2 hens would be
better.

the correct tren for a female duck if "duck" not hen, sorry just a
slip of words and mixed up thoughts. Also, you are correct just one
"duck" will get too much attention actually I hace a 3 to 1 ratio.

sorry about the confusion...

I meant a female chicken. I have heard that ducklings that have been
hatched by a (chicken) hen get imprinted on hens, and the drakes will
try to mate with female chickens later.

They probably will not fight but they will try to exert dominance over each other. It is possible that one will become the honorary "female." As others have said, I would definitely get some female ducks. It is best when the females outnumber the males. I have seen situations where an overabundance of males "mated" a female to death. It doesn>t mean this will happen with yours but it is best when there are more than enough ducks for the number of drakes.

Laurn

Oh, and congratulations on your new ducks!
