Where do you find this "extra" methane and hydrogen?
Do you actually mean Natural Gas?

There is plenty of methane escaping into the atmosphere. In point of
fact it is an ignored contributor to global warming (methane is very
much more efficient a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.) But we are
not making any significant use of available methane as a fuel. As for
hydrogen there is essentially NO free hydrogen on Earth to be used as a
fuel. All of the hydrogen on Earth is combined with carbon or oxygen. As
such is it already "burned" (technically oxidized) and can>t be used as
a fuel.

Hydrogen is one of the most abundant elements as it is present in each
water molecule. In order to produce hydrogen gas fuel from water there
are different processes available. The most known is electrolysis
which of course needs electric energy and is not very cost-effective
for fuel production. A more promosing approach is the pyrolysis of
supercritical water steam using for instance Pt/Pd or Titanium oxyde
catalysts. There are several work groups working on an optimization of
the catalytic systems (see for instance
http://sciencelinks.jp/j-east/article/200105/000020010501A0215463.php
or http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2004/12/65936). With
stable catalytic systems it should be possible to produce hydrogen
with focused sunlight in a not too far future.
