I read sci.lang.translation (and other newsgroups) on newsgroups.comcast.net
This morning I received a message from Comcast saying they were going to
discontinue their newsgroup service.
I>m not especially computer savvy (I am aged). Is there some other free
(gratis) way of
accessing newsgroups? I>d really appreciate any help or advice. Thanks.

And, on the Worldwide Web, http://groups.google.com/
which as I understand it treats its particular selection of newsgroups
as a subset of its own "Google Groups."

According to their Website they only distribute 1,622 newsgroups -
and sci.lang.translation isn>t one of them.

There is also news.motzarella.org which is free, but you need to
register and they give you name and password for access. It includes
sci.lan.translation as far as I can tell.

One word of caution about Google Groups: Google makes no effort
whatsoever to filter spam posted via Google Groups, prompting many
readers to automatically delete/mark as unread any posts coming from
Google Groups.
www.individual.net costs 10 euros a year and gets great reviews.
I use usenet-news.net , which will sell you access in blocks. I bought a
2 GB block for 2 US dollars on November 1, 2007, and so far have used
less than 500 MB of it. If you don>t download a lot of binaries (images,
music, movies, etc.) you should get similar value.

I use motzarella (among others), and am satisfied with it.
On the website http://news.lacave.net/servers/reader/list, there is a long
list with free newsservers. You can type in a newsgroup you>re interested
in, and it will filter the list on servers that provide that newsgroup.
Only thing is, it>s in French, which might or might not be a problem for
you.
