WEST CHESTER TWP. – Police say a duo known as the “Interstate Bank
Bandits” robbed 11 banks in five states during a three-month spree
that grew increasingly bold.
Two of the banks were hit within an hour of each other July 10 in
Greater Cincinnati.
The robberies were nearly identical: at 9:30 a.m., the men entered the
National City Bank on Cincinnati-Dayton Road in West Chester Township,
leaped over the counter and grabbed cash.
About an hour later, they did the same at the PNC bank on Hempstead
Road in Springfield Township.
No weapons was used or threatened. No one was hurt.
Their alleged spree ended this week.
Authorities announced Thursday that Malik Rahmel Dillard, 31, of New
York, and Zarqurous Sanders, 24, of Atlanta, Ga., were caught earlier
this week.
Dillard was taken into custody in New Jersey on Monday, and Sanders is
behind bars in Alabama, said West Chester Police Sgt. Steve Oakes.
It remains unclear when they will face trial for the local robberies.
The two have yet to be charged federally for heists in Virginia,
Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina, said Michael Brooks, a
Cincinnati FBI spokesman. They are not suspects in any other local
robberies, he added.
The spree, which grew increasingly bold, drew the attention of
national media, including “America’s Most Wanted,” which features a
story about the two on its Web site.
According to the site, the robberies began May 8 at a PNC bank in
Spotsylvania, Va., where one suspect stood at the front door while his
partner – deposit slip in hand – approached a teller. The man
whispered his orders, demanding all the cash from the drawers.
By the third heist, the site states, both suspects entered the bank to
announce their robberies.
Surveillance video shows the men jumping on top of bank counters and
dropping down beside tellers.
"America’s Most Wanted" said the men hit banks near major highways,
using the interstate to make their getaway.
Despite these efforts, the men were sloppy, “America’s Most Wanted”
reported because they didn’t wear masks and didn’t try to hide their
identities.
