You just failed Grade 4 or 5 math, Mark!
DIVISION BY ZERO IS NOT DEFINED, PERIOD!
That is a LAW (rule) of math. It cannot be changed.
1000000/0 can be 1000, or 10001, 50000000 or even infinity. All
those
answers would have to be acceptable under your rules. Under math
none
are acceptable. Math has fixed rules. You can>t just go and
change
any you don>t like.
Saul Levy
You just flunked first grade. You have one baked pie and divide it
into
no
parts at all, how many peices of pie do you get? One! Since you did
not
even sink the knife into the pie at all!
Ask a kid if that one is too hard for you.
You may be amazed.
You are wrong, division by zero is an infinity, and your own example
of
a pie divided into zero parts demonstrates your error. By not using
the knife, you have not performed any operation, division or
otherwise,
and therefore you cannot claim that 1/0 = 1:
x / 0 = infinity, for all x except zero and +/- infinity
No, you failed first grade, too.
x/0 = x, in ever case, because x is what you started with, and nothing,
that
is 0, has ever happened to it.
[/quote]
Actually, you>re both incorrect, and the only one who
is correct in this argument is Saul. Warren, it cannot
really be said mathematically that x / 0 = infinity. I
once thought as you do, but the catch is that infinity
just does not behave well as do other concepts of
math.
In math, the best that can be said is that if you build
a series of numbers divided into, say 1, such as...
1/4, 1/2, 1/1, 1/.5, 1/.25 . . .
this type of series will "tend toward" infinity. But 1/0
is not a member of this type of set because division
by zero is *undefined*. It is not equal to 1, and it is
not equal to "infinity". It is "undefined" (i.e., it has
no meaning).
Of course, there are some fascinating applications in
higher mathematics...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_by_zero
....however, when it comes to "real numbers", division
by zero has no meaning, similar in physics for any
length shorter than a Planck length. No meaning =
Undefined.
Mark, Warren is correct in that your examples that
seem to show you that X/0 = X are examples in which
no actual operation has been performed. To see this,
try performing a decreasing series beginning with one,
such as...
1/1, 1/0.1, 1/0.01, 1/0.001, . . .
The numbers in this series get larger and larger, and
again, they "tend toward infinity". Is it logical that, if
you were to finally include 1/0 in this series, that its
value would mysteriously jump back up to the value of
the first member of the series? 1/1? Of course not.
The value of the later members of the series would all
get larger and larger and would tend toward such a big,
huge, giant number that it would effectively be infinity!
(but not quite, unless you define it as an infinite set).
When you divide a pie by 6, you have six pieces of pie.
When you divide a pie by 1, you have one big piece of
pie. When you divide a pie by 0 (zero), then you have
not divided it at all. And this is like trying to divide the
pie by, say 1/4 or 1/2 (remember that dividing by 1/2
is not the same as dividing by 2). If you divide the pie
by 2, then you have two pieces of pie. But if you try to
divide the pie by 1/2, then you would have...
T W O P I E S
And if you try to divide the one pie by 1/4, then you
would end up with...
F O U R P I E S
So the smaller the number you use to divide, like say,
1/6, 1/8, 1/12, then the more you will tend to end up
with...
A N I N F I N I T E N U M B E R O F P I E S
Try to see how illogical it is to imply that...
1/1 = 1/0 or the more general...
X/1 = X/0
In real-number mathematics, 1/0 and X/0 have no
meaning -- absolutely no meaning at all.
HOWEVER, because you appear to want to be quite
the forward thinker on this subject, i sincerely hope
that you will read the interesting stuff at the link for
Wikipedia i gave you above. Who knows where your
revolutionary ideas may lead?
happy days and...
starry starry nights!

I>m sorry you haven>t heard from Mr Newman.
I haven>t heard anything either.

My tiny checking account now has about 47 dollars less in it,

OctaNews just took my money and, near as I can tell,

What a way to make a living ! ?

Individual.NET is Thee Only NNTP server that>s worth a damn. |

I don>t know how Paul Newman is doing these days,
maybe I>ll find something about him on Google ( later ).
Yes Bert, I did make it clear that you wanted no money.
Using your name and address, I told Paul Newman:
“ Paul Newman, How about colored popcorn for all occasions ?
Blue for the birthday boy. Pink for the birthday girl.
Red, white and blue for the 4th. Green for St. Patricks day, etc.
I know how it can be done easily with food color.
I have many more ideas on popcorn.
Like you, I have blue eyes ( we look a like, same age, etc. )
and I just want to make children happy.
You don>t have to pay me for my ideas. ”.
and, later, with my name and address:
“ Dear Mr. Newman, My online friend Bert Glazier is a big fan of yours.
He likes to help kids, just as you do, by coloring the popcorn.
You can see what he>s saying about you, just Google:
‘ Newman Glazier site:Groups.Google.COM ’. ”. |

Jeff When very young people said I looked like Paul Newman. Maybe it
was my blue eyes. I have always gone to see every one of his movies. We
do have a lot in common. He has more money I got more hair. He has a dry
sense of humor and so do I I doubt if he has lose of memory so far I
still can find my car at Wal Mart. He likes going to have breakfast at
a deli(breakfast club) and I did too Wish he would email me. I am one
of his big fans. Bert |
