Here in the UK, I use woodshavings as a floor cover in the huts. If you use
straw for this, I find it can encourage hens to lay on the floor instead of
in the nestboxes.
For the runs (I have to have them in huts and runs now because of foxes) I
use shredded material from all the pruning of shrubs and trees that I have
to do which they love to scratch about in and throw into their drinkers
which can be a bit of a nuisance when they had such pristine water a few
hours ago..
I have heard good reports about Dettol for disinfectant. Some say that used
one quarter Dettol/three quarters water sprayed around the hut is effective
against red mite. I haven>t tried it yet but am going to.

Good suggestion about using prunings in the run. I have 5 Black Rock hens
that are mostly free range but we shut them in their run/house overnight and
early mornings and when we need to do certain garden work. But are there
any shrubs/tree prunings that might be poisonous to hens that I would have
to be careful about?

If you lay a sheet of ground cover membrane down first it is much easier to
manage and you get less contamination from the soil below.
You can then collect it up and create a wonderful mulch pile.

hmm - probably avoid the most obvious, but they are stratching around in it
rather than eating it, in general.
If you have concerns about particular species then I would suggest you look
them up individually.
Having a covered run area of chips and bark is a great boon to any birds in
our unpredictable showery climate. Saves on the cleaning out of the main
house, as well.

I would never use Jeyes fluid in a house that is being immediately

Another thing about Jeyes fluid and all the phenol disinfectants: they
are EXTREMELY dangerous to cats.

Yet another reason for me not to rush out and buy some, then!
