Vaccine Autoimmune Project Publication

1 in 88 - Autism/ASD among Children of Military Families

By F. Edward Yazbak, MD, FAAP and Raymond W. Gallup

In another sensational article, Ed Yazbak, of our scientific advisory board
and Ray Gallup, our co-founder are revealing that the prevalence of autistic
spectral disorders among children of active duty military personnel in the
U.S. has reached an alarming 1 in 88 and that some 90% of these children are
not getting ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis).

This is unacceptable and we ask all activists and communities nationwide -
regardless of their cause - for unity so as to help these unfortunate and
forgotten children. It is the least we can do for our brave men and women
in uniform:

Angela Warner, a military wife, activist, and mother is calling for
immediate action! We request that everyone please support her courageous
and tireless efforts:

"The CDC Says 1 in 150 Children Have Autism; We Say NO! Nonsense!"

Please visit Angela>s Blog, Autism Salutes for further information and to
support the military children and families:

UPDATE: US Department of Education 2007-2008 Autism Statistics

The number of children with Autism attending school has continued to
increase since 2002 when a CDC study revealed a prevalence of 1 in 150 among
8 year old children. VAP has just obtained 2007-2008 figures for New Jersey
and Minnesota and compared them with figures for school year 2001-2002:

New Jersey up 111% among 3-5 yr-old and 150% among 6-21 yr-old

Minnesota up 197% among 3-5 yr-old and 202% among 6-21 yr-old

Complete data for 2007-2008 will be published on the VAP web site in October
when the U.S. Department of Education Annual Report to Congress is
published:

How many of them need it? If the rates are that high, it suggests that
authorities are now diagnosing milder and milder cases who would
previously have gone unrecognised. ABA is a useful form of treatment
for some autistic children, but certainly not the one-size-fits-all
treatment it>s often made out to be. For many, and possibly most, of
those children, it just isn>t going to be a
necessary/beneficial/appropriate treatment. (My son almost certainly
has mild ASD, although we>re still awaiting the formal diagnosis. I see
no reason why he would benefit from ABA at this stage.)

All the best,

Sarah
