Hi Folks,
If I took pictures of my three week old chicks, is there anyone who
could help identify them?
Thanks,
Martin

You can give us a try <g
But images cannot be uploaded to the group, they do not work, so you need to
use one of the free online albums, unless you have something yourself.

I>m definitely seeing some that look like barred rocks (the ones that are
mostly black with yellow shading), some that are probably white rocks (the
chicks with sort of a gray cast), some that look like they could be Rhode
Island Red or a derivative like Red Star. The ones with stripes on the back
might be brown leghorn (or any breed with closer to the "natural" chicken
color). Not sure what the yellow ones are with a lot of feathers. If they
have feathers on their feet, they might be Cochin or Brahma. No idea what
the black ones are with sharp white markings.

What are the options?
You must have a short [or long] list of possible breeds and colours that
'could' be in the mix depending on what the hatchery had available.

Pleee-eease - how do you tell? The chicken-sexer my parents saw in
action at a farm where they bought chicks (this was *decades* ago) did
it when they were one day old. I start getting suspicious at various
times but there have been some who kept me guessing till they started
crowing! I>d love to be able to sort them with certainty at that young
age before I get to know them as individuals. And cockerels are poor
eating so I>d rather not have to feed them so long!

Mine are descended from a gene whirlpool so combs are red, black, rose,
blobby, conventional picture-book, hidden in top-knots etc etc.

This like lots of little combs already. some beginning to get deeper pink.
Leghorns, particularly, are often VERY early, with combs, and of course
feathering gives it away in some colours / breeds.
Some of those with "bruiser" heads will be probably male, although in some
strains of some birds like Wyandottes that can be misleading. They can turn
out to be girls.

So would we all -- most breeds / strains are not reliably sexed until later.

If you have a specific breeding programme in a single breed then you can
also select for feather sexing traits so you can divvy them up early that
way.

I>ve got one now, the weirdest mutant I>ve ever seen, whose neck

camera so far.
