One of my young cockerals got in a fight with the top rooster and in the
process hurt his one eye quite badly. As far as I can tell he still has the
eye, it is just very badly damaged and he>ll probably be blind. Is there
anything I can do for him, as it is starting to look like its got pus in it.
He still can blink, but all it is just yellow/white, no sign of a normal
eye(iris/pupil).
Thanks

Sounds like it may need to be removed, if there is no sign of a normal eye. I
have a hen who was injured in a similar way. Took her to a vet who enucleated
(vet word for took out) her eyeball and stitched the opening shut. She>s fine
now, with only one eye. I didn>t wait for infection to set in, the vet said
that if I didn>t get it enucleated it would get infected and the chicken would
die a slow painful death. She was my favorite hen, very tame, so I paid ~$250
to get it done.
Good luck,
Eileen

If you can>t find a vet that tends to fowl or exotic animals then try
washing eye with boric acid. Also, any vet should be able to give you
an eye ointment containing an antibotic. Sky

Chickens are resilient and stronger than you think. If you can get some
Terramycin ointment to put in to the eye for a few days, she will be all
right. We>ve had some chickens that had an eye go bad and we just let them
alone. Should be fine after a few days of the ointment.

I have seen eyes look like that after a pecking. The yellow/white may just[/quote]
be the eye healing over after disruption. They rarely get any sight back in
them. A more sure sign of infection would be a colored discharge. I have
never personally had a pecked out eye taken out of a bird. I have also never
seen a peck out eye get severely infected to the point of killing the bird
but, there is always a first.
I would start with treating the eye with ophthalmic antibiotic. Watch the
bird for signs of infection. Check for excessive heat production around the
eye. Compare one side of the face to the other. If fever persists or signs
of infection or illness begin, have a vet look at the bird. |

In the case of my hen the eyeball was in the socket but was ruptured, I think
that>s why the vet said that it would not heal with the eyeball in place.
Hopefully your cockeral still has his eyeball intact, unruptured. Maybe the
white/yellow that you see is the generally white 3rd lid (don>t know proper name)
that closes from front to back instead of up and down. I realized after I sent
earlier post that I sounded pretty dire, hopefully your cockeral was not injured
so badly. Chickens can recover from some really atrocious wounds. There is an
antibiotic ointment expecially for use in the eyes that you may want to try. I>m
sorry that I don>t remember the name of it.
Best of luck,
Eileen
