[quote]I live on the (belgian) countryside and would like to keep some chickens.
The problem is that my garden is not closed with a fence, but there is just
some barbed wire .... so the chickens can get through without any problem
at all.
So I suppose that my new chickens will promptly disappear in ... nature.
I intend to build myself a small wooden shed and could make a small
(temporary) fence around this shed. But I would like to let the chickens
roam free in the garden (meadow actually).
What could I do to keep the chickens "at home" after I open the small fence
... and is this really necessary - maybe I can put a very nice cock ... so
that the chickens of the neighbours start moving towards my harem.
PS In front of me there is farmhouse where a considerable number of chickens
roam freely and sleep in the barns. They even continue doing this now that
the farmer sold his farm and some artist has moved into the place.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,
I>m not sure I understand your problem. Are you worried they might not
find back home?
In that case I can assure you they will return for the night if you keep
them inside their shed for two or three days after you get them, or if
you indeed build a temporary run you can also let them into that run
during these first days. It helps them to learn the shed is their new
home, and if it>s free from draught and mites, they will happily come
home in the evening.
Or do you want them to stay in your garden during the day although there
is no proper fence? In that case I>m afraid you will find they won>t!
Like your neighbour>s chickens, they will explore their surroundings.
Only a fence will prevent them from doing that!
