Hi,
I have a Wyandotte, Maran and 2 Rhide Island Reds who are contant in their
ark and run, but I would like to let them roam in the garden a little, with
adult supervision!
Along one side of my narrow garden I have a 100ft long solid fence which is
3 1/2 foot high (that>s just over 1 metre) and I>m wondering whether that
would be high enough to keep the hens in.
Assume in your answers that I have clipped one each of their wings anyway.
I>m sure you>ll apprecaite me asking this kind of question in advance of
losing any hens !!!
Regards,
Simon Mc |

To be safe our fences are 6ft high.
4ft would be risking it.
You could extend the height by fixing another timber batten, and staple
chicken wire. (We had to do this on a 3ft fence that splits the garden).
Good news is you>ll have no weeds! - and then possibly no plants either
after a while!).
They help keep the grass down too. |

Our fences are also 6', and we let the hens out into the garden. However,
we have an escapee, who insists on laying an egg in next door>s garden every
day. She jumps onto a 3' water butt, then onto a 10' fence. I did clip her
wing last year...probably wants doing again!

Mine are 6' but they still don>t prevent escapees, especially if a
predator is prowling & scaring them up so I ran bird netting (like
they put over fruit trees) over the top. Works great & is cheap.

We also have 6' fences, wire ones. My theory, (and I have yet to do
something about it) is that chickens are less likely to try and get over if
they have nothing clearly visible to aim for. My ratbags perch on top of
the gate or the bit of fence with a board running along the top of it. I
put some rodent wire netting across the top of the gate but it>s only a
narrow strip and they>re still escaping. I>ll have to put another bit higher
up..... that>ll make it around 7 or 8 feet....... ye gods and little fishes,
if they get over that we>ll have to go out and buy a longer ladder!
I>d love to cover the whole run with netting but there>s a wind break on
one side, of rather high pittosporums which shelter the run. So it>s Upward
