Raqueeb Hassan,
Parkes = PARKs
Arecibo = Arr rah SEE' bow
(Arr -as in the word arrow)
(bow [arrow-shooter] rhymes with "tow" [to pull], and not with "cow"
[animal])
"Arecibo" is not English, so everybody here is equally lost, trying to
speak the language of somebody else. :-)

Arecibo is in Puerto Rico where they speak Spanish and is more pronounced
like Aresibo since in latin america the "c" (in front of "e" or "i")
and the "z" are pronounced like an "s"
[quote]"Parkes" -----> Par' kes

This one being in Australia where they speak english (don>t tell the brits
I said that ;o) would probably be pronounced like "Parks"
So I would summarize it as
"Arecibo" ---> Aresibo
"Parkes" ---> Parks

Arecibo is probably an attempt to represent a pre-Columbian language
according to Spanish spelling rules.
As I understand the pronunciation, which may not be the true, local,
one, it would go into the Bengali script (not the Arabic script also
used for Bengali) so as to transliterate as:
aa ra sii bo
where aa and ii are the long vowels. ra might also transliterate as rai.
Some people might argue that the aa should be a.
"Parkes" -----> Par' kes
Parkes is park' s
I think the transliteration of the Bengali script would be:
phaa kh s
where both the kh and the s have the vowel cancelled. As it>s English, the
ph and kh are really half way between p and ph or k and kh, respectively,
and you might prefer to transliterate as the un-aspirated consonants.
The r is not pronounced, it modifies the a, but the a is still a pure
vowel.
If the transliterations aren>t clear, I might be able to look up the
Unicode code points.
Note that the Lovell telescope, in England, is also used for SETI, although
not for SETI@Home. |

around Parkes observatory. Two young kids (a boy and a girl) were
there .... I forgot the name .... but I know for sure .. it>s not "the
dish" ... can you please tell me the name of that tv series?
Thanks once again!

Round tones
"Arrrround the rrrrocks the rrrugged rrascal rrran."
Or like in:
Moses supposes his toses are roses,
But Moses suposes erroneously.
For Moses he knowses his toses aren>t roses
As Moses supposes his toses to be.
