To show solidarity with Burl>s lucky boy Roscoe, I have posted four pictures
of Gold Duckwing birds, two males and two females, on the
sci.agriculture.poultry web site.
http://groups.msn.com/sciagriculturepoultry/goldduckwingpattern.msnw
The hens are shy, so it is hard to get good photos of them. They are ash
and cream on their backs in a pretty wild pattern, and pale to deep aslmon
on their breasts.
Enjoy! If you have a good photo of a Gold Duckwing (of any breed) feel free
to post it in this folder.

What does "duckwing" mean? Can a bird not of that breed have duckwings?

Yes, it is just a description of a color pattern, and a number of breeds
have this, including Araucanas, Ameraucanas, Australian Game, Yokohamas,
Welsummers, Leghorns, and various game birds. I don>t know if other GDWs
are like this, but my boys start with a rich french vanilla cream color on
the hackles at first, then the saddle hackles turn gold, then as they get
older more and more of the remaining hackles turn a rich burnished gold.

I think that my roosters have duckwings. I>m under the impression that they
have an Americauna heritage and maybe some game bird. They are barn-yard
blend, but very hansdome! They are bearded with sideburns. The hens lay
blueish-greenish or pink eggs with the color going all the way through the
shells. Hopefully I can post a few pictures on the MSN site soon. It>s great
to see others peoples birds!

REMARKABLY similar as a cock bird to our Phoenix cock, in fact I am
beginning to wonder if we WERE really sold a Gold Duckwing.... I may post
a pic of him to the folder later so you can see for yourself :-)

I>m a bit puzzled. Golden duckwing is just a colour which can be made in
most breeds, it is not to my knowledge a breed. Basically it is the wild
type pattern (e+) with gold (s) added.

Gold Duckwing is a color pattern, in an earlier post, I listed many breeds
that have it, and I am sure there are many others that also do (when I am in
pain I don>t ger exhaustive like I used to). Since other longtail breeds
have this color, I imagine it is legitimate in the Phoenix as well.
Breed and color pattern are separate issues, most breeds come in several
color patterns, which can be dramatically different from one another within
the same breed. Phoenix is the breed of your cock bird, Gold Duckwing is
merely what color he is, instead of his being white or black or any of
dozens of other possibilities.
Hope this helped,

I am ignorant! I came into this late, and after 1/4 reading an article in
a UK country life magazine that mentiond Gold Duckwings. I had assumed,
very wrongly, that this was a breed, how wrong I am :-) I now know how
customers feel when I put them right about motor racing car matters. We
are all full of enthusiasm, only the knowledge base differs <G> If I
didn>t learn something every day that day would be kind of wasted, thanks
for the kindly lesson. I sincerely hope your pain is transient, my wife
suffers arthritis, sometimes magnanimously, sometimes like a bear with a
sore head, life can be cruel!
