A white Christmas coming up?

ROSS MCGUINNESS

October 29 2008

We may be getting used to stories about weird weather, but yesterday was
one of the weirdest October days in living memory.

Snow came down in London - the first October dusting since 1934 - and
Birmingham, Coventry and Nottingham got a white covering too.

There was also a hefty sprinkling in Hertfordshire.

Thousands of homes in the south and east were left without power after
the cold snap damaged cables.

And one man was killed when two lorries crashed and one shed its load,
spreading tonnes of lard across six lanes of the M40.

Some regions, including the north-east, experienced their coldest
October weather since 1974. The snow played havoc in Hertfordshire,
which saw 5cm (2in) of the white stuff, causing trees to come crashing
down on to roads.

Another tree was responsible for closing the A40 in Buckinghamshire,
when a branch fell on to the carriageway.

But, after the 24 hours of chaos, things are expected to calm down.

More chilly conditions were expected last night, although the Met Office
predicted we have seen the last of the snow - for now.

Nevertheless, Ladbrokes has slashed its odds on a white Christmas in the
capital to 7/1. Dig out those snow-shoes immediately.
