....Which raised the question: Why did Ranger 8 approach and impact at
an angle instead of head-on as the other Rangers did?

According to "Ranger VIII Photographs of the Moon" page 6, it was done to[/quote]
obtain the largest photo coverage possible away from an overhead sun
orientation. The combination of large overlap between photos and better
lunar relief due to the shadows "provided for a maximum of stereo coverage".
They did this "even though the last frames would be blur-limited". |
