Gigabyte is making a big deal about their motherboards having "all
solid capacitors".
Is this some new type of capacitor technology, or are they saying
that they don>t use electrolytic (paper?) capacitors?
Could be tantalums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantalum).
Then again, aluminum electrolytics are solid (no liquids used in
electrolytics since the 1930>s AFAIK).
I was under the impression that aluminum electrolytics use some kind of
electrolyte paste. I thought that is why they have rubber seals, and why
they dry out or explode when over-stressed. |

There is some moisture involved during manufacture like you
mentioned; it is very close to a solid.
Perhaps those plastic electrolyte types are what is alluded to inthat ad. |

From:

It appears your call waiting standard is:
call waiting = 425/50,0/1000,
which means 425Hz for 50 milliseconds followed by 0Hz for 1000
milliseconds.
That means you>ll need to detect the 425Hz tone for long enough to

the modem and transfer the call to the phone.
The part that most people miss is that EMP is measured in volts

This is really bad news for telephone systems and really good news
for digital watches.
Getting back again to my original inquiry, a mechanical watch has
some very thin and delicate parts in it, such as the hairspring.
Let>s assume a very thin wire 1mm in length, and the EMP pulse is
directed so that the full voltage is directed lengthways along the
wire.
In the Wikipedia data I posted a link to in my prior message (the
data came from a Government study), I saw EMP of 50,000 V/m as being
possible on the ground from an exo-atmospheric detonation of a nuclear
warhead above the U.S. So for a 1mm long, very thin wire, we might see
as much as 50 volts applied across the wire for a brief moment. Could
this be enough to frapp that part?
Now, someone who replied to my first message suggested I do an
exhaustive Google search to see what data exists online on the impact
of EMP on certain non-electronic devices such as mechanical watches --
no doubt this has been studied at the National Labs and elsewhere. But
my cursory search on Google has so far uncovered nada.
One reason for my cross-post to sci.physics is the hope that someone
there who is expert on EMP effects could point me to specific studies
with actual experiments, such as done at Sandia. I suppose I should
just contact someone at Sandia and ask them.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread so far.

the magnetic component of the pulse could damage the watch mechanism
without doubt, but this would be at a shorter range than the damage
will be seen to electronic devices.
BTW sci.electronics isn>t a real newsgroup.
