I had a quick look at a job database in order to check the quantity of
open coal jobs published these days in the USA, Canada and the UK.
Everybody is talking about the job crisis and the shrinking economy
and just wanted to know what is out there on the job market. This is
my result:

USA Canada UK
Coal Jobs 767 65 16
Geology Jobs 4,210 397 2,202

I used the database available at http://2ajobguide.com/coal_jobs_mining_geology_jobs.aspx
where you can browse over 1,200 job boards with one single search (a
so-called meta-search engine). Unfortunately, I donīt have the exact
numbers from the last year, but I remember that the number of coal
jobs vacancies in the USA was also in the range of 850 (I checked it
in July 2007) and in Canada above 80. I know that this is not
sufficient to define a trend but I will do the same exercise in a few
months in order to monitor the difference in job openings.
