Finally, climate change has hit the hustings in the US presidential
elections. But not from the two candidates seeking to lead the world>s
only remaining super power and second biggest emitter of toxic
emissions next to China.
Instead it was left to the Vice President runners Joe Biden and Sarah
Palin to put climate into the big voting arena that will decide on 4
November who is the next U.S. President.
Palin, the Republican governor of Alaska, asserted that climate change
is real but said in a public debate with her V.P. opponent that she
didn>t want to get bogged down by the cause while acknowledging human
activities had a role in heating up the planet. "What I want to argue
about is... how are we going to get there to positively affect the
impacts?"
Biden, the Democratic senator from Delaware, said knowing the cause
is critical to finding a cure. "If you don>t understand what the cause
is, it>s virtually impossible to come up with a solution. We know what
the cause is. The cause is man-made. That>s the cause. That>s why the
polar icecap is melting."
Obama, McCain and Biden supported legislation to limit climate-warming
greenhouse gas emissions. Palin said she too is in favour of reducing
emissions but added "other countries that don>t care as much about the
climate as we do, we>re allowing them to produce and to emit and even
pollute more than America would ever stand for."
