Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side.
Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
You>re chicken (frightened easily)
Let>s play chicken.
Tastes like chicken. |

Old Biddy (Not sure about that one, since around here a biddy is a baby
chick)
Clucking like a mother hen
Local children like to do this to each other:
Say what?
What?
Chicken butt!
No, I still don>t get it, but a chicken butt is very puffy, so maybe it>s a
way of saying the person has a big butt. |

Something rare is '..as scarce as hen>s teeth'
A small man/person/dog (in stature) but willing to take on anyone bigger
(in a fight/arguement) is 'like a bantam rooster' or 'as game as a
bantam rooster'
Someone who panics 'runs around like a headless chook'
A well known curse here is 'may all yours hens turn to emus and kick
your dunny (outdoor toilet) down' We Australians are renowned for some
colourful language unfortunately. It>s supposed to be sh**house but I
used to get my mouth washed out with soap and water for swearing and the
lesson stuck. LOL

someone who is "clucky" (loves babies or wants one)
someone who is "the cock of the walk" (!!!)

A couple I remember from Leo Rosten>s "The Joy of Yiddish":
When a Jew eats a chicken either the Jew>s sick or the chicken is.
No doubt reflecting poverty where only a matter of considerable
importance would make you kill livestock.
Chicken soup called "Jewish penicillin"
Remember those books of mottoes and little stories with uplifting
morals? The first one was "Chicken Soup for the Soul".
"The Joy of Yiddish" is a delight, full of interesting words with
definitions and wonderful, often very funny, examples of their use.
Being a patchwork language like English Yiddish has words from all-over
adapted, joined to prefixes and suffixes from somewhere entirely
different and then given a whirl in the blender of frequent use by
people whose tradition is rich in discussion e.g. when it comes to
religion you>re not expected to shut up and believe what you>re told!
Not many hints on chook raising, but plenty of short good reading e.g.
for TV ad breaks!
