|
|
Carmakers have seized on the U.S. financial crisis to press EU
countries to soften their proposed curb on vehicle exhaust emissions.
US car sales and leases have dropped over recent months and European
auto manufactures are lobbying governments to reconsider legislation
for emission limitation due to the US financial crisis, inflation and
high fuel prices.
The European Commission intends capping emissions by 2013 at 130 grams
per kilometer, which is now being strongly opposed by the car industry
on the grounds that it>s too expensive to upgrade the engine
technology during a difficult financial time.
Fiat>s Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne told Daily Planet Media that
the commission should look at assisting carmakers with loans up to the
value of 40 billion euros that could be spent on green car technology.
Fiat and Toyota have gone public in opposing the EU proposed
legislation to lower emissions claiming that the measures will further
depress car sales and result in the loss of export earnings and many
jobs.
