Cutting edge DNA analysis led police to arrest a 27-year-old St. Paul
man in the stabbing death of 90-year-old Irene Kunze in Hopkins.

The Hopkins Police Department said the man was arrested Wednesday
evening in St. Paul without incident. He was tied to the crime scene
by new "soft touch" DNA evidence.

Corey Omar Wells is behing held at Hennepin County Jail on two counts
of first-degree murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

Hopkins Police Chief Craig Reid said this was first time the
technology has been used to identify Wells in a Hennepin County case.

He said the technology enables crime scene technicians to recover
traces of skin left on clothing to develop a DNA profile.

Before soft touch technology, he said detectives needed to collect
blood or saliva samples to develop DNA profiles.

The soft touch "is an amazing development. A great thing for police
work," Reid said.

"With this new technology and new certification that the lab has they
can look at clothing and see where somebody touched it and get 'soft
touch' DNA off of it," Reid said.

He would not discuss a possible motive or other details about the
crime until the case is resolved.

Authorities say the suspect was visiting somebody at the apartment
complex July 7, the same day authorities found Kunze>s body.

"The family of Irene Kunze has suffered a great loss, we are indebted
to them for their help with this investigation, our thoughts are with
them during this difficult time," Reid said.

In this case, DNA samples collected at the Hopkins woman>s apartment
were analyzed by the Hennepin County Sheriff>s Crime Lab. Hennepin
County Sheriff Rich Stanek said DNA was found that didn>t belong to
Kunze.

He said several people of interest were interviewed and their DNA
samples taken.

"One of the crime techs commented maybe a ten percent chance they may
find something using different techniques that they were employing,"
Stanek said.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said, "It was a very difficult
crime scene and superb police work."

Kunze>s family released a statement, expressing their gratitude.

"We>re thankful for all the support and caring from the community and
grateful for all the time and effort that the Hennepin County
Sheriff>s Department and Hopkins Police put in, to finding the person
who did this," the family statement said.

Hopkins police released a criminal history of Wells. Among other
convictions, Wells was convicted in 2001 of first-degree aggravated
robbery and released from prison on March 6.

Accoridng to the criminal complaint, Wells had watched Kunze take out
the trash on July 7 and deemed her as a 'good' target. He waited
outside her apartment until she returned and he then attacked her.

When a struggle arised between the two, Wells stabbed Kunze. He stole
a small amount of money from her billfold and other items in her
apartment and fled the scene.

The Hennepin County medical examiner>s office ruled Kunze>s death last
week a homicide by sharp force injuries. It>s the first homicide in
the Minneapolis suburb in nine years.

"Throughout 6,000 years of recorded history, the
pure-blooded African Negro has invented nothing.
Not a written language, weaved cloth, a calendar,
a plow, a road, a bridge, a railway, a ship, a
system of measurement, or even the wheel.

He is not known to have ever cultivated a single
crop or domesticated a single animal for his own
use. For shelter, he never progressed beyond the
common mud hut, the construction of which a beaver
or muskrat is capable."

Rape is a way of life for Darfur>s women. Sudan>s Darfur
crisis has exploded on many fronts -- violence, hunger,
displacement and looting -- but United Nations peacekeepers
say the biggest issue now affecting the region is the
systematic rape of women and children. The Sudanese
government, however, insists there is no problem:

Vices the most notorious seem to be the portion of this unhappy

have silenced the reproofs of conscience.
