VINELAND, N.J. -- A Boys and Girls Club boxing coach has been charged
with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.
Marvin Johnson, 42, repeatedly assaulted a girl he met through his
position at the club, authorities said.
Johnson volunteered and was employed by the Boys and Girls Club in
Vineland for nearly three years.
The assaults began when the girl was 12 and continued through this
year, authorities said.
The victim is now 15.
Authorities said the assaults occurred in Vineland and outside
Cumberland County, but not at the club.
Chris Volker, Johnson>s supervisor, said he was stunned by the
charges.
"When something like that happens, it>s quite distressful," Volker
said. "We>re here to keep kids safe."
Volker said Johnson was fired, soon after the allegations surfaced.
"We did criminal checks, everything," Volker said. "Kids liked him.
Parents seemed to like him."
The investigation was prompted by a report to state child welfare
authorities two weeks ago, claiming that Johnson had sexually
assaulted children involved in the club, authorities said.
"We are investigating to see if there are other victims involved, and
certainly if there are, we will aggressively pursue those," said Ron
Casella, Cumberland County Prosecutor.
Johnson previously coached children at Vineland>s Police Athletic
League.
Johnson is charged with several crimes, including aggravated sexual
assault, sexual contact and kidnapping.
He was arrested Monday in Volusia County, Fla.
"He apparently knew we were maybe looking for him and left the
jurisdiction," Casella said.
Authorities will hold an extradition hearing in Florida and Johnson
could be returned to Cumberland County next week.
